In 1958, I was on the MV Dundee and we took 150 E’types to Boston usa, the were difficult to store , they could not be stacked on top of each other so we were light ship crossing the Atlantic in February, not a pleasant voyage.

On my first trip on the SA VAAL there was rumour circulating that an E type had been damaged by the dockers whilst loading into the garage.
On arrival Cape Town the cars in the garage were unloaded first, and sure enough an E type emerged with a dented front end.

I may be wrong about them being “E type”, but they were Jaguar sports cars we took them on board at Preston, we then sailed to a Dublin for frozen beef for the US army, I was a a cabin boy, so what did I know

Hi Graham, My youngest (also named Graham) is a Master Mechanic for Jag. He just sold his Morris Mini shown in the second row of your photo. Your Docker joke is choice ! We all know Dockers walked through the gates. Nowadays they have a parking Lot close to the ship they are working, so younger viewers may miss the joke entirely. I worked the Great Lakes at Chicago in 1963 or 64 and recall discharging many of the E Types at Navy Pier. Ship’s gear with spreader bars and wheel nets — not to forget the sack of straw in way of each rope sling. Now they just drive off ….

If you mention Dockers in Australia most people would think of the Fremantle AFA ( ozzie rules ) footfball team. Although Fremantle has plenty of their namesakes also. JS

Many years ago my mate had an E type, great motor with a leather strap across the bonnet.
Friday night eight of us would go to the pub, al put in one pound so we all got eight pints each.
Then off to the burger bar, not far about a quarter of a mile.
How we managed to get eighty in is still a mystery but we did,

There was a problem with the fuel tank so he had a very large plastic pot at the back of the Dickie seat which was the fuel tank.

But wait there is more, the convertible top would not stay up even when he could manage to move it.
One very snowy day we pulled into a servo looking like two snowmen, then the snow began to thaw on us................................

#2 Bill if it was E types as in the photo it was much later than 1958 they started producing them in 1961 until 1975.
Was it the XK 150 model produced from 1957 until 1961 when the E type took over.Attachment 33234
Sorry not being funny just I am a petrol head and a car buff.

Took xk 150s to LA and frisco in 57 .....a famous film star of the time came down to the quay to pose for television cameras etc us boy ratings tried to get in the picture ....i dont know why as i didnt know anyone in our street with a tele ....kim novak was the name of the star ...ah the pleasure ....happy days.....cappy

Oh you and your 'Dickie' seat,John!.I know what it is,although I always spelt it Dickey.Did you know that another former name for it is a Mother-in-law seat. Yes,as you'd expect M's-in-law always seemed to put a damper on things.....
But,I am at a loss as to what you mean in yr.post # 8 !
