Hi Vernon. next thing,
I was a SEA CADET for four years and we did all our training with the Royal Navy on Battleships, Submarines and Shore bases, eg. Fleet Air Arm and Gunnery Courses.
That was before going to the VINDICATRIX for the MN
very exciting for a young lad.

#48.. It a pity that the present day youth doesn’t take advantage of such groups Brian. I was a bit of a roamer and was in the sea cadets the army cadets and finished up in the ATC ( air training corps.) I must admit I didn’t last very long in the first two, but the ATC was there a few years. There is plenty of knowledge to be gained from any such institutions e.g I will never forget there are 32 rounds in a sten gun. That the rifle of choice if not just for its availability for US infantry in the First World War was the P17 which was .300 caliber. Came with a detachable cup which could be fitted to barrel to fire a grenade. Apart from training on link trainers , tiger moths and packing parachutes was a wealth of knowledge for any youngster. Also taught discipline a sadly lacking thing of today. We made our own pastimes in our youth and the cadets were a good choice for most of us. Cheers JS

As to the present talk on submarines most of my 4 years with a naval party was undersea warfare. Most think that wartime scenes re-enacted by Ealing Studios. And Hollywood take such made up scenes as actual as how it happened. As for torpedo attacks from underwater one should keep an open mind. I sailed with a submariner from the war years, and 95% of British submarine attacks as regards torpedoes was made from the surface, I wouldn’t be surprised if the U- boats did the same. Which literally means that the command position was from the conning tower on a half submerged conning tower at that. The old submarines were nothing like the modern ones of today. Cheers JS

John I doubt that our Collins class subs would get near enough to fire a torpedo let alone sink a ship, the noise would wake up and Indian Capt from his afternoon nap. The new French ones if they ever arrive would most probably have the Marseillaise blasting
from the conning tower.

hi des, as i understand it, the french subs are nuclear powered, but us aussies, in our infinate wisdom, are back engineering them to diesel electric. would have been better off with ww2 U boats.

We had the ATC when I was at secondary school, quite a few of the lads joined up.

I think you will find Kong was on there just to polish the brass, word was out about him.

As to the new Subs we will be getting in about 20 years time from the Frogs, by then Diesel may well have been banned, what then, oars or big rubber bands.

#51.. Maybe Jim suits and spear guns would of been more appropriate. Reckon with a tight squeeze would get two in a Jim suit , and with today’s equality that would be 1 man + 1 woman . JS.
