    Default UK National Grid

For 55 days until last night UK electricity was supplied without generation fro coal fired power stations
Last night due to a combination of high demand and a lack of wind for the wind turbines. National grid ordered the coal fired power station to come online and help it meet demand.
In three years all coal stations will have disappeared, wonder what they will do then.

Vic, I have heard that a special supply of candles has been ordered from China.
Hope they are not on a slow boat.

#1 Vic, in three weeks time, my son starts work at a new power station currently under construction on Teesside, it will have large gas engines (MAN I believe) driving the alternators. It is designed to only run at at periods of peak demand. They are planning to build six of these around the UK and a large battery storage site somewhere on Humberside.
By coincidence my current company is bidding for a repair job at a large conventional power station on the outskirts of Nottingham, and the repair will only be required to last 5 years, so there may be coal fired units still around for a while.

Tony, we have one of these back up gas turbine plants in the town, it is used quite a bit from the discolouration of the exhaust flues.
From what I read all coal fired power stations are due to be closed by 2025.

Here in Oz we get drop outs at times and something the 'experts' call Brown Outs.
Not a full blown drop out but enough to effect some of the area.

Funny but my neighbor was telling me about the time she worked in a bank and a guy came in with a shot gun.
Thankfully the cashiers got the shields up in smart time, but she said a number of the customers most likely had a brown out as well.
