Re: Did you know? ... London.
A true Cockney is someone born within the sound of Bow Bells. (St Mary-le-Bow Church in Cheapside, London).
Is Cockney Rhyming Slang dead?
Not on your Nelly! Cockney Rhyming Slang may have had its highs and lows but today it is in use as never before.
In the last few years hundreds of brand new slang expressions have been invented – many betraying their modern roots, e.g. “Emma Freuds:┬áhaemorrhoids”; (Emma Freud is a TV and radio broadcaster) and “Ayrton Senna”: tenner (10 pound note).

Re: Did you know? ... London.
'Pony and trap'?
Rubbish; nonsense, or 'of poor quality'. Often shortened just to 'pony'.
This is Cockney rhyming slang - pony and trap -> c@ap.
Usually contracted to just "pony" and distinguished from the other meaning of "pony" (to mean twenty five nicker)
What else do you expect from a pony? Ruby Murray?

Your way off but not to far the older term was:
Cockle the then Cockney slang for 10 pounds (tenner).

Hi John
I know you originate from S.E. London but you have a far greater knowledge of London than me. Well done .
However ex pats always seem too, don't know why though .
Not missing home a bit in your old age are you ?

Kindest Regards
Graham
As a young lad at secondary school in New Cross we used to go at lunch time up to the city.
Young lads out for some fun, going to places such as St. Paul's and many other.
History always fascinated me and over time reading and visiting I picked up so much.
My fathers mother and father had always been central London people and I learned a lot from them.
In more recent times I have mixed it with the husband of one niece and he is a mad London historian.
It is a city so many know very little about even though they may live there, and sadly very little history is taught at school now.
As for missing, no mate London is no longer the London I grew up in or knew until about 1980.
Now we play when we visit spot the white man, spot the London man, no not the place to live for me any more.
Sad to see how the city has gone.

Re: Did you know? ... London.
Nelson from his column still surveys the fleet;
Every lamppost on the Mall, starting from Admiralty Arch all the way to Buckingham Palace, has a ship on top of it. It is known as “Nelson’s fleet” and is just another detail connected to the Battle of Cape Trafalgar.
