Re: History of Toilet Paper
But of course for us normal people long before such inventions we made do with the local; news paper.
This of course did bring it's own problems, dark ink rings around the rear end, nothing to wrap the fish and chips in and then in the 80's nasty cases of adds was discovered.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: History of Toilet Paper
The trick with newspaper John was crumpling it all up beforehand then straightening, this maide it much softer and took most of the ink to your hands rather than the other end.
A couple more on the same subject.....
26... in 1996 President Clinton passed a Toilet Paper Tax of 6 cents per roll, which is still in effect today, Obama tried to triple that but the House wouldn’t. Pass it.
28. The most expensive toilet. Paper in the world is a Portuguese brand Renova.
17. Coloured toilet paper was popular in the US up until the 1940s.

Re: History of Toilet Paper
A good business idea for someone, each section of the TP to have a picture of well known politicians, oh what joys and pleasure could be had from that, kt

1959 - Sailed with a chief R/O who had been through the war. He said TP was rationed to three sheets per visit. The maxim, he said, being: " One to wipe, two to clean, three to polish."

Re: History of Toilet Paper
The Great TP Shortage of '73
In the 1970s, major energy shortages resulted in virtual panic regarding gasoline. So, in 1973, when comedian Johnny Carson joked about a potential toilet paper shortage, people took him seriously, buying up all of the local supplies. Carson went on the next night, apologizing for causing a scare, but in some places the shortage continued for weeks.
Apparently, this Chinese invention of toilet paper never caught on in Europe at the time. Rich people used cloth or hemp to clean themselves. The poor used rags, leaves or their own hands. King Henry VIII had a designated "Groom of the Stool", and the job responsibilities were exactly what you think.
