Funny that, my number at "T S Indefatigable" was 68.
No wonder I was always getting into bloody trouble there.

    2022 - Nectarios of Optina

More than a century ago, the Russian spiritual leader Nectarios of Optina made a prediction that shocked everyone who got word of it. According to reports at the time, God told Nectarios in a dream that mankind would end in the year '22.

Now this makes one Wonder does it not!??????

    John.
If Ukraine has that amount of coal reserves, why the hell is our idiot sending them 70, 000 tons of it? Which no doubt he has loaded himself, and is now hopefully one of the crew.

Depends on the type of coal there Des.

There are basically two types, coking and thermal.
Thermal for heating, coking for the making of steel.

To make steel carbon is required in the mix, if not all you get is cast iron.

But have no idea which type is being sent.
Could be that though they have enough it may not be accessable with the Russian army in the way.

It is reported to be hard steaming coal for power generation. THis will help te eco mob as Australian coal gives far less ash and bad gases than the Russian coal now being used.

Topazes-no,not those mineral gemstone thingies but a member of the crew.It could be from the Sanskrit word tapas, which you must admit does sound vaguely like Topaz. The word means heat or fire, but if you knew Topazes like I knew Topazes you might agree Topazes were anything but fiery !

Aah,the Topaz-memories of the lowest caste deck rating (an Untouchable?) on Indian crewed vessels-lower than a deck boy-' though he was usually a much, much older man.I'm not sure if he was officially paid a wage (JS will know) but was paid by the other crew ,like a paid servant,as happens in life back in India.
Visions of a very old man on deck, wearing a dhoti and flip flops (!),Gandhi-fashion , back bent, sweeping the deck with his besoms, one arm behind his back ,or doing all the sh* t jobs the other deck crew thought were beneath them. It was rather embarrassing,as a cadet to have Topaz when passing him on deck lean back into the hatch coaming, eyes averted, him virtually saluting and bowing with a cheery "Good morning sahib.Namaste !".(I soon got over it !.) Such a contrast from the white crewed ships where a cadet would be virtually ignored on deck ,and regarded as a 'spy' or a future boss in training who would likely cut their overtime or log them.... (joking)but ,who am I kidding,it was an archaic dying remnant of colonial days in some British companies, long past it's sell by date in 1969 when I first went to sea.Soon it would all be swept away-including the whole British Merchant Navy as we knew it.

Here endeth my succinct discourse on Sanskrit or Hindustani deck topazes -don't try saying that if you have a lisp.
I wonder if there could be a rank of DTU-Deck Topaz Uncert?,a bit like DHU'S that once caused a bit of dissent in the British crew ratings system?

I feel like a curry now ! I'll pop off peremptorily perchance for a poppadom.
