Re: southampton tour
The place has changed a tad since our times in the 60's.
But the Duke of Wellington, spent some great evenings in there with my mate and his wife.
Often took a weekend down there and on one occasion the owner, no doubt not happy with our exuberance, asked us to show some decorum!!!!

Re: southampton tour
I have been their a few times over the last couple of years and what that video reminds me of is how the city has become quite soul less in comparison to the glory years of when many on this sight were shipping out of there. It is still a nice place and the people are friendly, but it shows one ugly passenger ship a few Isle of Wight ferries and a couple of historic buildings. I do not know if people were edited out of the video because there were not a lot shown. Anyway I am probably becoming just another nostalgic old man but I liked the place when it was a bustling port city.

Re: southampton tour
Anyone recall the Checkpoint Coffee and Milk bar (had a black and white Checkpoint Flag outside) it was Downstairs on the Main Drag very close to the Bargate.
Used to have nice separate Type Seats with high backs and a Juke Box in every seat on the wall.
Best Coffee and Banana Splits in the Town and also the best Girls too!
Remember being caught red handed down there when sitting with my one Girl "Tunisia" and in Walks my other one "Delia" oh boy! Wont say more!
But in the end it all worked out ,and I kept Delia! LOL
What good times and Memories we had then, now sadly all gone and will never be able to be repeated!

Re: southampton tour
It must have clothes in the mid 60s my late wife was from Southampton and many times in that shopping parade around the bar gate she would tell me that's where the checkpoint cafe used to be with great affection . On one occasion I agreed to meet her in town in a cafe of a department store for which she gave me an entirely different name it's only when I ask to Southampton policeman directions he pointed at the large Owen and Owen shop which is changed it's name many years earlier .

Re: southampton tour
I think the coffee bar culture of the 1960s where are you and have a frothy Coffee in a glass cup and park your motorbike outside whilst you listen to the music on the jukebox was brilliant now looking at the kids have late teens but spend it in the pub and it might be my imagination but I think they drink an awful lot more than we used to do

Vernon, I doubt there was a crew member sailing out f Southampton that at some time did not use that café.
It was a meeting point for all, many times going back to join the ship a number of us would meet there for a coffee first.
Wonderful memories.
