When Adolph Hitler rose to power in the 1930's, the Nazi regime misused the first verse to emphasize what they saw as Germany's superiority to all other nations. During the Third Reich, the song continued to be used as the national anthem, but only the first verse was sung. It was then followed with the so-called "Horst Wessel Song" which was a battle tune from 1929 that later became the Nazi Party anthem.

Cappy, If you honestly believe that the UK defeated the Germans and Axis powers without the Americans, Canadians Australians, Indians and other commonwealth nations & Russians ???
Certainly the sacrifice the RAF & RN & Merchant navy made was beyond doubt a vaillant effort and kept the Germans across the Channel. The British Army did bugger all but get there **** kicked until El Alamein. I am not looking for an argument. My post #4, was merely pointing out that National Anthems be they British, French or German are not exactly songs of peace and love for other nations. You are the one (yet again ) started slagging of the French. The French were lead by idiots as were the British early days in the war. The miracle that was Dunkirk was only achieved by the sacrifice that the French made at Dunkirk so the British army could escape. I am not Brit bashing but there again you seriously need to do a bit of reading.

Yes the Americans surely did come to help in the invasion of Europe . But the history that I've read only seem to have a variety of hurricanes and Spitfires flying in the Battle of Britain I don't remember reading about any typhoons flying there . I don't know what the French did though their resistance certainly put their life on the line . Having been not born at the time I could only go and what I've read and I think Hitler's biggest enemy was his own belief in his superiority if he hadn't opened up an eastern front with Russia then the result may have been very different . But when I read the stories of the Vichy France I sometimes wonder whose side some of them were on .

Do not condemn a nation because of what the Vichy French did. Show some respect for what the French did at Dunkirk. So the Channel Islands were not occupied by the Germans. Do a bit of reading. and stop bashing a nation you obviously know very little about.

After 14 years on the channel ferry run I knew quite a few Channel Islanders and they had quite a rough war in a lot of ways. Many of them especially people of Jewish descent were exported first to France and then to oblivion . For the Great Britain does not include the Channel Isles and in fact unless things have changed in recent times they are not even part of the European Community they have special derogation and are technically a crown dependency and as such are still believe it or not part of the British Empire .

Having read through the intelligent history of World War II and France then I would say at best they have a Chequered history they believe in their defence Lines being unbreachable was actually beyond belief . A little bit like president trump Mexican wall there are ends of it that you can go around even if it gets built . I have travelled through out France extensively over the years and I actually contrary to what some people might think I find them great people to be with especially if you make some effort and try and speak the language and I have had some really funny and amusing times . I still remain though first and Anglofile and then a europhile but my wartime knowledge is anecdotal and literary where there are many people on here who can remember it so I would bow to their superior knowledge . Will be nice one day to look at the thread where we agree to disagree without having to get pedantic

I pointed out that National Anthems do not seem to echo words of love and peace. The nations that have done there best to conquer the world /build empires, for the past , what 300 years, read the words from the anthems of Germany , France and Great Britain, 3 nations(taking the UK as a nation) who are nothing at best war mongers. Enslaved and committed genocide on millions.

I believe that the national anthem of any country is there to instiĺ national pride and a belief in national superiority as well as reminding us that God is on our side not theirs . It still brings a lump to my throat when I see the Union flag and here that they want God 2 save our queen , because it's our sportsmen on that podium

I spent six months working in Jersey in the late 60's.
There was still evidence there of the German occupation.
But it was the people, they wee the ones who went through it and came out the other side better for having had to endure the 'Jackboot'.
Their hatred of Germany was there for all to see, but they got over the war and moved on.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

The old socialist mantra Lewis, we raped and pillaged, enslaved millions. Yes we did some of those things that you accuse us of, but we brought peace and prosperity nd civilisation to many of the countries that became part of the Empire.
Ask yourself a question Lewis, if we were so bad, how come over fifty, yes fifty countries remain in the Commonwealth.
Secondly, there was an article in the newspaper (can't remember his name or country) he came from Africa, and he for one was not criticising the UK, in fact he wanted us to go back and rule as there was no corruption under us.
There was also a radio programme recently where they were discussing the UK involvement in African countries and most of the panel were positive about the UK development of their countries.
So it couldn't have been as bad as you make out.
