Things you should know
Cruising into the record books.
The QE 2, weighs 70, 327 Tonnes is 963 feet long. Cost 29 million pounds to build in 1967. Carried 1892 passengers and 1040 crew.
She had 5 Resteraunts, 2 Cafes, 3 Swimming pools, a 532 seat cinema, a Hospital and a Casino.
She used 433 tons of fuel a day, with 1 gallon of fuel moving the ship about 20 feet.
The rudder alone weighs 80 tons, around the same as 10 double decker buses
The ship could sail backwards at more than 20 mph, faster than most cruise ships sail forwards.
The QE 2 was not named after the current Queen , but after the wife of King George 6. This is why a number is used QE 2. Rather than the Roman numerals of Queen Elizabeth 11.
Vocabulary that's Vanished.
Ambodexter........One who takes bribes from both sides.
Betrump.............To deceive, Cheat, To Elude, Slip from.
Coney-Catch.......To swindle,Cheat, To Trick, Dupe,, Deceive.
Hugger-Mugger....Concealment, secretly, Clandestunely

Quacksalver.........one who dishonestly gains medical knowledge
Man-Millinery.......Male vanity or pomposity

With the assistance of the press. To assist the general public to show how knowledgable they are. How many already knew. .??? Cappy when that girl said you had a fair snout, you shouldn't have man-millineried her, she just got her words mixed up, there was no need to parget yourself. Cheers JWS

#2... Don't know the. Price of marine diesel today as regards what a shipowner would pay fuel wise today Rob. This could be subsidised in the way of decrease taxes of the relevant governments to assist their own shipping, something I beleive the British government never did , just let British Shipping go to the dogs, another planned move ???? I had stated to me in the. 80s just over a hundred pounds. A ton. That would put the running costs of the QE2 43, 300 pounds a day for fuel alone. A lot of ships I was on with twin screw and 4 main engines used to run with 2. Engines declutched until needed the required. horse power. Used to burn about 28 tons. A day on 4 and about 16 tons a day on 2, cheers JWS
