#20... Colin have recollections. of reading in some owners Safety Manual about the pre normal practice of putting a weight in a monkeys fist for putting on the end of a heaving line . With the addition of it being for companys to have such safety manuals on board every vessel mainly to keep themselves clear of any claims, their shore based company safety officer was one of the many things they picked up on to prove to the world they were safety conscious. They stated in this particular book that the BOT heaving line knot should be used,as supposed to read all this guff maybe over A hundred pages in a lot of cases, and had to be signed as having read, I wonder what would have happened if you had delayed the ship for 5. Or 6 hours until you had read and digested the book.Maybe then spat it out as unpalatable . Seamen of the old school usd to take much pride in their weighted monkeys fists and usually dipped them into red lead to give them added weight. Try explaining to them that it was dangerous, had been done for a couple of centuries. The BOT heaving line knot you could put in any line took at the most 15 seconds but in most cases of any wind was hardly worth the effort of putting in. Cheers JWS

    Hi Colin.
Us seamen were very accurate with a heaving line, could hit a penny off a bollard, that lines man shouldn't have challenged you.
    Cheers Des
