    Default Butterfly Trays.

Remember the butterfly trays we bought in Brazil or BA,I bought one in Rio I think it was. There was one on TV the other day sold at auction for £250.00 it was not as colourful as the one I had.Something was dropped on the glass of mine so the glass and the butterfly's were dumped in the bin,I think the wooden tray is still in the loft. Are there any still knocking around on this site.
    Regards.

Same here Jim, I bought mine in BA for a £1.00 in the 1950's the glass got broke during a house move and it went into the bin. I bet the majority of them ended up like that.

    Hi Jim,

I have two, bought in Rio, both still in perfect condition. One is made up of whole butterfly's and the other is a Rio scene with the Sugar Loaf and Christ the Redeemer with butterfly wings as the sea, sky and bits of land. No idea what I paid for them. Gave them to my Mum & Dad but got them back when they died.

I suppose it's like any auction Chris you need a couple of people in the room and some on line who want it to determine the price.
Regards.Funny enough Chris I bought this when I was single in the family home and my mother gave it to me when I got my own house

I also have two, never been used as a tray for food or drinks. one has full coverage of wings, very colourful. the other is half wings and the mountain scene. they have survived several moves in England and the move over here and a few more moves. nice to know they can command a good price.
    thanks Jim.

Just checked e.bay Stan lots of butterfly trays from around £10.00 upwards to around £70.00.Obviously at that auction a number of people wanted it and were trying to out bid each other which pushed the final bid to £250.00.

I too had two of them brought by my shore bosun when we were in Tubarao but they got lost in one of our moves.
As an aside BBC Flog It came from the Isle of Wight yesterday and there was an ex. seafarer selling a Marine Barometer and Chronograph along with what looked like a paper Certificate Of Competency as Master Mariner. It did not appear to have the cardboard backing that used to be part of those certificates.
I missed a bit of it so intend to go on the IPLayer and check it out.
    Anyone else see that episode?

Moving on from butterfly trays many will remember the coffee and tea sets from Japan, they were quite colourful and when you lifted the cup up to the light you could see a Geisha girl in the bottom.I remember we had an antiques phone in on the local radio, somebody phoned up to ask the worth of one of the coffee sets, the expert said about £30.00 and that there were hundreds of them in Liverpool due to the amount of seamen who brought them home

    JIM,

I've still got my tea set unfortunately we broke one of the cups when we were moving it about 6 months ago, I've also got the coffee set. I think I paid either a pound or thirty shillings for the tea set (Old money) and the same for the coffee set. Not bad considering they are almost 60 years old.

    John.
