    Default Nautical Jargon

    When shooting the nets on a drifter the Skipper would bring the Drifter afore the wind,we would slack the mizzen out which left us sailing
    before the wind then the crew would throw the nets over,,the Skipper would be steering the ship it was known as Steering the Law.
    Sometimes we would be shot, the wind would change 180 degrees which could cause a phrap,this was known as Wind against the Law.
    If some one for some reason wanted the capstan stopped he would shout Larnch.
    Tissot was a kind of preventer.
    Steering the Law,
    Wind against the Law.
    Larnch,
    Tissot
    Any one have any idears on the origin of these words/

    Certainly not any terms that I can recall using at sea, more than likely fishermen terms, different accents would bring out different sounds for the same action.

    Cannot remember them being used on Deep water trawlers, perhaps they have drifted away

    Sailed with quite a few trawlermen, now I know why I was getting funny looks when I went down to the mess deck when someone shouted Larnch. Cheers JS

    Anyone know today with the different superstructures and designs in general if they still have and refer to the jumper stay and triatic stay. Believe on 3 masted vessels the triatic stay went from foretopmast to maintopmast to mizzenmast topmast. The jumper stay from foretopmast to signal mast on top of monkey island or maybe to mainmast also. Most modern tonnage doesn’t have masts like of old. Stays like such were used for flag hoists and for heaving wireless aerials aloft the leads with insulators from radio room to the main aerial which today are probably non existent. JS.

    No need for masts these days, just a stick with enough height so horizontal and vertical heights for nav lights can be complied with. With GMDSS you only need a couple of VHF aerials and a MF whip. The rest are just a couple of small comes for the sat C and B.
