    Default Nutters

I have literally met thousands of people during my working life at sea, one of those that stick in my mind is a skipper off one of the stand by boats who to give him the benefit of the doubt, obviously thought he was getting efficiency up to the top notch. Unfortuanetley for him however others did not see it the way he viewed it. He was supposedly ex SAS carried his own survival suit, which were non existant on such vessels, most boat crews prided themselves on how quick they could launch and recover and return to vessel. This bloke had the nasty habit of being on watch, putting his survival suit on, pushing the Man Overboard Alarm and jumping over the side without telling anyone. It was only a matter of time before he got the sequence wrong, and put his suit on jump over the side and maybe suddenly remember he had forgot to push the button. After repeated warnings the company had to fire him, apart from being a danger to himself he was a danger to everyone on board especially leaving the Bridge un attended, as he may also have left the kettle on and boiled dry and cause a fire. The first part of story is absolutely true and as may still be alive do not want to cause embarrassment to him, anyone on site may have also of known him. JWS

Des He may even be on this site, have strong reservations about Louis as he spent a lot of time in the North sea. When I first went into the offshore work had to start and learn fast as mate again. Standing behind the weather door leading onto the cargo deck with big green ones coming over the stern and trying to count when a brief lull would occur so as to open door, one of the ABs who had spent all his time on seismic where they never got their feet wet, kept staring at me with his mouth open after explaining what was about to happen to get this one urgent container on to the rigs crane hook. You expect me to go out there he says that's too dangerous for me, he was too slow on his feet in any case had to get the other AB out of his bunk who knew the score. The one who had adversity to good clean icy North sea water couldn't wait to get off on return to Aberdeen. There are seamen and seamen most that I grew up with now are dead, but never really knew one that was scared of the sea, respect yes, but not fear as some showed. Just joking about you Louis unless you were on ships you haven't disclosed, and was in the SAS. Cheers JWS

#5... Its out of date, only lasts 30 years. It was 1964 when I was approached by the twerp from the Foreign Office who wanted info. from Murmansk of all places. said I wasn't very patriotic when I said no the third time. That should be one of Brians questions to Mr. C. Sir are you a Patriot. His answer would probably be What is that. In 1964 he would be a babe in arms if not just a dirty thought in his old mans mind. When you look at some of these ministers we should remember that in a lot of cases they are a lot younger than us, and therefore have a smaller brain, as have had less to remember. Probably it strains their resourses having to memorize their bank number in Panama and similar dives around the world. Arrivez de derchez. Or as Mussolini said why cant you find a 5 foot lamppost and go a bit easier on my neck. JWS

I suppose my Aunt would also come under the title of this post, as already mentioned her writing to old Ted the Fiddler. My brother who is 16 years younger than me was telling me some stories when back across some years ago. She used to take him out as a nipper and used to buy him an ice cream, however the first time this happened when the cornet was handed to him and the vendor said that will be 3d madam she would say , oh I don't pay I am related to Mary Queen of Scots, whereupon the vendor would grab his ice cream back. However my brother had a solution to this problem whenever it happened again he would always take a big slurp before the ice cream was handed back. It was then up to the vendor if he took it back or just wrote it down to a loss, and to experience. Most families also had their nutters, JWS

1962 on the Stirling Castle, a DBS picked up in Cape Town on return trip, jumped overboard, costing the life
of a deck hand who tried to save him, killed by a shark, he was buried at sea same afternoon, the DBS was
finally hauled into the launch and brought aboard, isolated, and kept on a suicide watch, (it was rumoured that
implements were provided for him that would allow him to get on with it, but could of course be false). but I
would think qualifies as a Nutter, big time.
There was talk among the crew that the ships master was reprimanded for ordering the deckhands into shark
infested waters without shark fighting equipment, don't know if true, might be of interest to deck officers
on site, who would know better. I posted this incident before, but recent news items on shark attacks
in NW Australia reminded me of that terrible event, still have newspaper clipping which my the girlfriend
    cut out.
