It is the same in almost every part of the world now Joseph.

All the Sailor Bars have all gone, All the girls have all gone.
I think the British Seaman kept the economy of many of the worlds countries going,
Now we have container ships with third world crews who never go ashore, and spend as we all did, the ships today are only in for a day then off again. We had long term relationships with many of the bar girls.
A couple of years ago I went to Buenos Aires for three days, I went down the Viente Cinco de Mayo, No Texas Bar, gone, No Marina Bar Gone, No Light House Bar gone, May Sullivans gone. and so on, The street was just full of shops, Offices, banks, and nowt else. I nearly wept.
The only place to get a drink was in the residential Hotels. I went down to La Boca area, That hadn't changed much but the women were a little rough round the edges.
The only Sailor Bar that I could find all around the world that was still open was the Scandi Bar in Valparaiso,
See Below, 1, The Vigilantes are still in B.A. 2, The Scandi Bar in Valpo, 3 and 4 in La Boca one or two still around but Rough, and in Montevideo, the 5 the California Bar, closed and SE VENDE. for sale. sad it was empty. Two Swedes were Killed by the Vigies in that Bar when a Swede stuck a gob on me and a fight broke out,

The lash, the birch, read all about them all. What I can add is that I once received six of the best from my headmaster for fighting in the school yard. Used to do it out side the school gates after that. So conclusion, is capital punishment a successful deterrent ?

Neil, is capital punishment the way to go? Let me tell you about a very good friend of mine who spent 35 years asa warden in Pentridge.

In the late 50's early 60's there were three men found guilty of murder, two in Victoria one in Tassie. But they got long sentences instead of the noose. After release all three commited murder again, one in the same way as the first.

One good thing about capital punishment, they never ever reoffend.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

I was involved in a Murder case in Liverpool, THE CAMEO MURDERS, 2 cinema Managers were shot dead in an apparent robbery.
Two men were arrested on very dodgy evidence give by two criminals who were paid to give evidence and a BENT Detective
George Kelly was hanged in Walton and Charles Connolly was sent down for Ten Years in Wakefield. He became a very good friend later.

With Lou Santangeli, a Liverpool Businessmen , George Skelly the author of the book The Cameo Conspiracy, [on amazon]and I sent a lot of evidence to the Court of Criminal Appeal in London.
Their names were cleared. , they were Innocent.
I had met a man in Melbourne who claimed to have done the murders and "Got away with it," See in Seafaring Stories thread, in Swinging the Lamp Forum. Voyage on the Dunedin Star.
So even after experiencing the hanging of an innocent man, I still think the Death Penalty should be brought back.as a deterrent. with DNA now evidence in a lot of cases is always proven. Today Many murderers come out after ten years. and kill again.

    Brian.

Hanging them outside the school gates is a bit severe Neil.

I would say that capital punishment for the offender is a very successful deterrent.
