British Rail were using containers on the cross channel ferries in the 1940's, but I believe the ferries were using them in the 1930's 8' x 8' x8' steel containers lift on/lift off

I remember being on the bridgeof the Euryades, Blu Flu Sam Boat. as we were coming into Singapore in January 1960, We were passing a traditional cargo vessel which had two containers on its fore deck.
The Captain said to the Pilot, "What are those", the Pilot replied, "That is the beginning of the end of Blue Funnel." `Rubbish` , said our Captain. we had a BIG Fleet in those days with more new traditional ships being built.
    All gone soon after.
    Cheers

In Cape Town about 1963 a ship dropped anchor in the bay and what we now know was a container of sorts dropped over the side. The contents, Bic lighters. The local match making company had bought the lot and dumped them considering them a competitor to their matches.
