Re: White Christmas at your house....
Up to now, we have only had about 1-2 cm of the white stuff, which lasted some three hours. the latest forecast is for approx. 1cm on the 19th. temps are above average at around 5-8c during the day. suits me fine as we are saving on heat and not having to plough the stuff. local council is saving an awful lot not having to payout for snow removal this year.
regards, stan

Re: White Christmas at your house....
I don't know what the weather is like where you are ?? but here in my part of Essex it seams to have gone all to cock, this time
a couple of years ago I was clearing snow away from the front door, today the 15th Dec which is only 6 days from the shortest day,
mid winter, the postman was walking around in a short sleeved shirt, I was getting a sweat on in a thin jacket out with the mongrel,
temp was 52/54 f, only get that some summer days, and only about 200 miles away up north they are up to their neck in floods and
snow in parts, here the birds are making a racket because they think its spring, still I expect it will soon even itself out as usual. F.

Re: White Christmas at your house....
I don`t need the ap. for seeing snow, I just look out the window. what a site, by morning we should have about 10-15 centimeters more and whatever comes after that is a bonus. temp. -12c
don`t ever remember a Christmas without any snow since we moved here in 1973.
so all our Christmasses are white (like it or not)
a lot of people will decorate their street with lights and sleighs and blown up father christmasses cut-outs of the famous tin soldiers, snow men, angels and thousands of coloured lights. their reflection in the snow realy show it off. a favorite is to drive around to see all the different streets to see who has the best one.

Thanks all, Keith nice to have a winter that looks like a winter, brings back memories of St Johns when I was on the Beaver Boats
in the Fifties during the winter months, Montreal & Quebec during the summer.
This weeks forecast topsey turvey, summer in mid winter. today, 58f. Thurs, 57f. Fri, 55f. Sat, 59f. Sun, 56f. Mon, 55f.
One good thing to come out of this, at least this years Gas bill will be lower than usual. F.

Re: White Christmas at your house....
Weather here is as usual, mad as a cut snake. Here in Melbourne in the middle of a heat wave 35 to 41 between Tuesday and Sunday this week, then a cool change before the next hot one. 32 is the expected for Christmas day, but up in Sydney, not a very religeous lot it would appear, the heavens opened and hail stones the size of tennis balls, so much damage done. It was a tornado which is not uncommon but not welcome at any time. But weather patterns are just that, weather not climate change or global warming.

Re: White Christmas at your house....
Fredricks #8 mention of St. Johns in winter, reminds me of my first trip there as a cadet on the Beaverfir. It was a holiday for the cook as everyone was partying so hard that meal times everyone was catching up on a few zzzz's. As cadet it was my job to trot up the road to buy burgers for all the officers who had turned in after knocking off at 1700 and catching a few zzz's before starting partying again at 20000 (21 days in port 20 parties lasting from 2000 to 0600 next day). Coming back one night with a stack of burgers, one fell onto the pavement landing in the slush and so I had nowt to eat that night. Next trip about 7 weeks later, same deal, cadet up the road every night for burgers, all partying again every night. Coming back the first night spotted the burger dropped last trip, now covered in about 4 inches of ice.
Every day was an early turn too to sweep snow off the hatch covers prior to opening them for the days work. Temp. never above minus 10 or more. One Canuck winch driver used to sit driving the winch in just T shirt and khakis keeping warm by swigging from cargo brand Plymouth gin.
Using taxis in St Johns you took your life in your hands as all the drivers seemed mad and just drove at speed despite the roads being covered in ice and snow and the taxis being rust buckets with cranky engines and brakes. Only 3 licensed premises in St. Johns at that time so ships with bars were a magnet for the locals. Used to have huge combined parties with Manchester \liners lads, Manchester Faith being one I particularly remember.
One my first trip there I thought that I had lost the ship as going ashore I had walked down the gangway onto the dock but coming back with the height of the rise and fall of tides only the wheelhouse and mast tops were visible. Most off putting.
Cadets 2nd job in St. Johns, consisted of night work puncturing hundreds of empty ale cans so they sank and tossing them over the side. Must have left a mountain of empty Harp and Tenants lager tins in the harbour each trip.
