on CP ships the " Beaveroak" they issued you with a soap called "Astral" used to take some home for my Mum & Sisters because it smelt so feminine.
It had us AB's looking over our shoulders, Just in case !!

I have used Old Spice for years and still do. My wife said that when she met me and we danced I used to smell nice, why waste an asset.

Those who sailed with UCl would know that many a first class winger had the lot, perfumes etc that is. I remember one peak steward saying their area smelt like a Persian brothel. So men using such stuff today may not be so new. I was never one for too much of it, bit of after shave and a Little dab of Brylcreme for the hair was about it. Now the Brylcreme has gone the same way as my hair, after shave if I get some as a present. But moisturizer yes, head arms and legs. Oz sun is harsh even in winter so there is a need to stop the skin from drying out. Wearing shorts all year does not help the legs. But I drink 3 litres of water a day as well as two of coffee. That leaves room for the essentials such as beer and Gin.

I recall that Astral soap in C.P. though cannot recall who its manufacturer was. Your mention of the Beaveroak stirred memories for me. I was cadet on her when she got converted to a pure container ship in Bole Bolnes yard in Rotterdam (bit of a farce) and renamed C.P. Ambassador. I was then 3rd Mate on here for a number of trips, last one being when we had to abandon her off the Grand Banks when the engine room flooded.
Purser/Chief Steward was Tommy Cooper (not the comedian) who used to spend his days sitting on the box containing the bellows set outside his cabin, supping gin.
Cannot recall the 2nd Stewards name but he was a tall thin Scotsman. Bosun was John something (who I think was on this site some years ago). Only ever came across that Astral soap in C.P.

What was that ditty again was it Mrs O'Malley from down in our alley had an aversion to washing their ears, so Grandma scrubbed them with the Lysoap, now they haven't been heard of for blooming years. Were quiet a few verses to it, and not probably properly correct. JS
