Bury Market is the home of the Best Black Puddings ever. Fantastic.

#42. I recall serving breakfast tourist class on the Saxonia when an American passenger asked me what black pudding consisted of. 'Pigs blood, fat, and a little barley to bind it all together' I said.'Ok' he said, 'I'll just have two eggs over easy'. I didn't think he'd enjoy knowing that the skins were made from pig bladder- I had my sights set on a generous tip on arrival in New York.
many years ago I bought a tool hire company in Leigh(next to wigan).I persuaded the mangers to work satudays as up to then they had only opened for contractors trade.Got four counter staff and decided as it was only fair that I show willing and join them .As I knew nothing about hiring out small tools I was the odd job man.I volunteered to go to the chippy to get the lunches and when I asked them what they wanted(I was paying as well) they all asked for"a pie and a smacked ****" which turns out to be a meat and potatoe pie placed on the bottom half of a barm cake and the top half placed on top of that and smacked flat.Plenty of calories there then.
In parts of west Lancashire they have thick pea soup with a meat pie floater plus the tomato sauce with a side plate of French fries ( to dunk ) -- now that is living !! Regards Peter in NZ.
I am replying to my own posting above regarding Black Pudding. I have eaten this delicacy in Brisbane ( in cafés near the Port area ), believe it or not, in Las Vegas (it was quite popular with the Locals ) and on a bus tour of Spain ( it was called blood pudding in the Hotel restaurant ) Regards Peter in NZ.
How dare you Marian
Greggs are the staple food provider for the masses in not only the North East but as far down as London and are even on the continent.
They bake more sausage rolls per day than the rest of the U.K. put together and have even been the subject of a T.V. documentary series, "Greggs, more than meets the pie", a North East family firm.

#47. 'Greggs on the Continent'. Ordering my lunch in the Dordogne- 'garçon, perhaps to begin with, escargot garnished with a small sausage roll. Then the Plat du jour of course, the 'Full Greggs' including Pie of The Day, the artery busting layered speciality consisting of a bin lid sized cheese and ham butter crust laden offering.
I might pass on dessert.
BonAppetit.
#47, Dearie me, seem to have hit a nerve, sorry John, but don't rate macaroni cheese in a PASTRY CASE as nutritional. [That's what they tried to sell here] On par with a deep fried black pudding or mars bar! Wouldn't touch any of them with a barge pole. Utter stodge. No slur was intended on their name, sandwiches, sausage rolls or whatever else they provide...
........#49. You're forgiven your unintended slur Marian. What is unforgivable is the Scotspersons regards for their national dish of haggis which contain more un nutritional ingredients than a dozen branches of Greggs having a sale. I'm forced to eat it during a Burns Night supper once a year and if it wasn't for the accompanying Islay malt, I doubt if it would stay down.
