Peter, Coffee shops here in Melbourne are so many it is now refered to as the coffee capital of the world. When we first came here in about 1980 it was common to see paeople walking along eating food from a paper bag. That has now gone to be replaced with the cup of coffee.

# 1 John -- I once attended a banquet put on by the Chinese Bosun in Keelung to celebrate the birth of his first grandson. This feast lasted about 12 hours and was reputed to have cost him a years earnings. The 100 + guests squat on their haunches around the walls of the restaurant and the food was spread out on the floor. The centre piece was a baked swordfish - about 2 metres long. The starters were equally amazing - I recall the pickled pigeons heads, you picked one up with your chopsticks and broke off the beak with your teeth and then sucked out the brains !! What a revolting taste !! The only drink available was brandy, not your average bottle shop stuff but vintage Camus. The were doing this '' yam sing '' thing which was a challenge to knock back a huge goblet of brandy in one gulp. The intention was to get all the European guests ( mostly the ships officers ) paralytic drunk. Luckily the Chinese are not good at holding their liquor and generally were the first to collapse -- by 5 am the following morning there were about 90 Chinese bodies flaked out all over the place and about 8 European officers still standing but feeling very sorry for themselves. That baby had a good start in life ! Regards Peter in NZ

Hi Evan.

Hi John A.
You certainly picked a good subject, look at how many views you've had, must have been a lot of big eaters at sea in the old days.
