Re: legal reasons
From my book 'Gross Britain' which nobody seems to want to buy - in spite of a couple of 5-star reviews - since I am not, and never have been, a gung-ho salesman.
At the press conference ‘Magic’ Manson was bombarded with questions, many with inferences of brutality or at the least heavy-handedness. Having fielded most of them as well as he could, he then handed the floor to General Laidlaw.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” said Laidlaw, “as you know, a law has been passed giving me the right to hold suspected terrorists for up to 120 days before being charged. I have decided that the definition of terrorist also applies to members of Minors gangs who commit, or attempt to commit murder. Or who inflict serious bodily harm on any member of the public, while running riot in the streets terrorizing ordinary people.”
There was uproar from the floor, to which General Laidlaw raised his hands for silence. The clamour continued, so he calmly sat down, poured himself a glass of water, and proceeded to drink it very slowly. The noise gradually subsided, as he appeared to ignore the ladies and gentlemen of the media. They were not accustomed to this sort of behavior from a public figure.
General Laidlaw eventually stood up again as the noise subsided.
“Please listen to what I have to say, and spread the message. You can ask any necessary questions when I’m finished.”
He looked around the room at his audience as silence fell.
“This great nation is in an intolerable mess, and I have been mandated by our duly elected Prime Minister to bring back the Rule of Law. Bring back also a police force whose members are expected to be Law Enforcers, and not Social Workers. Tolerance, and the rights of the individual, have been for too long extended to those who do not merit either. Society as a whole has allowed itself to be undermined by vocal minorities. We seem to have forgotten that democracy is about the greatest good for the greatest number. ”
He paused in surprise as there was a faint smattering of applause.
“It is high time the majority of decent people in this country - which includes most of you – stopped having to live in constant fear of attack while going about their lawful business. From here on in, young people who blatantly break the law in the belief that they cannot be adequately punished, will be put into the Army’s new Reform Camps for 120 days. They will receive the minimum necessary shelter and nourishment, and will be subject to military discipline. All other privileges will be just that – privileges to be earned or not.”
A loud buzz went round the room as the news people discussed this.
“At the end of their 120 days they will be charged or released. Any who re-offend will go back in again, as often as necessary.”
He paused for a sip of water.
“The jails of this country are becoming overcrowded, as a result of their popularity as holiday resorts.” There was a ripple of subdued laughter.
“We intend to turn them into jails again. All luxuries such as television, coffee machines etcetera will be withdrawn. As in the Brat Camps, prisoners will be given the basic essentials, and privileges will have to be earned – really earned. Jails are there to punish those who break Society’s rules; something we seem to have forgotten. From now on each jail Governor will have a military equivalent, whose duty it will be to make sure that it is no longer forgotten. There will be no more university courses for inmates at taxpayer expense. Surely, any right-thinking person must realize that it is a travesty for Society to pay for free higher education, as a reward to those who break Society’s rules? While many of those who abide by those rules must pay their own way? Frankly, it smacks to me of social workers using public money as a kind of bribery to make themselves popular.”
General Laidlaw paused once more as he looked around the room.
“I do not wish to be Draconian, and I am deeply saddened by the need for me to be here at all. Nothing will please me more than to be no longer needed for the distasteful task which has been thrust upon me. My troops are supposed to defend this nation from external threat. That they must now defend it from enemies within, is indeed a sad state of affairs. Please, for everyone’s sake, make sure that each and every one of you gets this message over to those enemies. It could save lives. That is all, you may now ask your questions.”

Re: legal reasons
They should be named and shamed. The radicalised UK youth could be out in five years, should be named.

Re: legal reasons
When ever it is shown on TV pictures of mobs and kids throwing stones at troops and the answer is to respond with rubber bullets, and inevitably a young one is hurt, there is a public outcry about his age. If they can throw stones they can also throw grenades. They don't have to be over 18 to pull the trigger on a firearm. They should be treat in the manner that they act regardless of age. To give a life sentence of 5 years is laughable especially to the culprits. Punishment very rarely fits the crime. Cheers JS

Re: legal reasons
Of course they should be named and shamed,if they are old
enough to carry out "Adult" type crimes then they should be
penalised the same as adults.
