Was watching Newsnight on the BBC last night and it contrasted the different approach to this problem between the EU response and that of Australia.
Australia has gone to the source and is paying traffickers not to traffic illegals to Australia and if any are caught they are put onto an island up N. Australia that is supposedly the most heavily guarded place in Australia so those illegals placed there have no chance of escaping. They are supplied with the basic necessities but they have no chance of getting into Aus. and are basically awaiting repatriation to there home country. Of course the human rights bunch are up in arms at their supposedly mis-treatment but surely they are better off there than been crammed into leaking, overcrowded boats with no food or water, facing the dangers of drowning etc.
In contrast they showed the EU response to the situation on a popular Greek holiday Island (Lesbos?) where even if they make it to shore safely, they face a trek of some 14 kilometres over rough ground before they can even reach a holding camp where they can get food, water and shelter.
An eye witness (ex-pat living there) has had to watch a number of boats filled with women and children capsize and its occupants drown before help could arrive.
The Australian system has slowed the exodus down dramatically by solving the problem at source but it is certainly costing Australia a load of dosh but to me that is far better than having tens of thousands of illegals wandering the streets with amongst them most certainly a number of terrorists.
Contrast that to the shambles of the EU response where it appears that once they have landed in Italy, Greece or wherever they seem free to roam to wherever they want. Think it was mentioned that Milan? has something like 10,000 of them roaming its streets with god knows how many terrorists amongst them.
The EU should follow the Australian model, pay the traffickers to halt their trade (just use some of the Brussels graft to pay them), find a deserted island somewhere to dump them on before shipping them back to where they came from and sod the Human Rights idiots.

All these daft Do Gooders should be asked ...."If you have a spare bed room in your home, will you let two of them to stay there??"
The obvious answer would be `No Way`.

#23... John once again the press is putting out false information if that is where you have sighted that the Australian Govt. is paying boat skippers into take their cargoes back. There is one case where they have cited that 40,000 dollars was paid to one boat. This has not been confirmed or denied by the Govt. their policy is that no information on how they tackle the situation is disclosed to the media or anyone else, which is the correct way to do it. The ABC although a public financed institutiuon the same as your BBC is a moralless piece of left wing Garbage the same as most of the Fairfax press. This freedom of the press leaves a lot to be desired and as said in previous posts would rather believe what I read in Pravda. It seems the British Press are shown the same symptons if they are printing un investigated truths of what the media print here. I bet they don't print that the leader of the opposition that twit ex Union secretary is under investigation for mis- use of union funds and probably a few more misdemeanours which the media shy away from. The press is living up to its reputation as far as I am concerned and the word gutter appears quite often. Cheers JS

    John S
The piece on how Australia handles the problem had PM Tony Abbot explaining to the reporter the stance of the Government and how it was tackling the problem. Also the reporter of the item attempted to get onto the Island where the boat people are held but was turned away by the Australian Defence force. They were able to film the camp from about a mile off shore and it showed the camp buildings surrounded by wire fences. They also had video on mobile phones that had been smuggled out of the camp showing the conditions inside the camp and although a bit crowded it was certainly better than being trapped on a leaky over crowded boat.
The ABC were not involved in the making of the piece and there were no acknowledgement t them in the credits so the piece seemed pretty accurate to viewers here.

The last Labour government as regards stopping the boats I can tell you just one of many incidents as regards myself and probably happened to other seafarers. Up north around the area of Ashmore Reef was tow master on a certain rig. Two boats were sighted the numbers on board being unable to count. Asked the OIM to phone Canberra and report 2 suspect vessels in Australian waters as all seafarers out here were advised to do. Got a recorded message from Coast Watch that they were closed until 0900 hrs on Monday morning, this being a Saturday night. That is about the full effort that the previous govt. put in to stopping the boats. As regards the present day system I am more than probably more aware than any reporter regarding the methods used today as still have contact with people at sea who are employed in such. Once again I say the press as usual are talking out of their rear end. They seem to go out of their way to cause controversy and argument to a government as regards this problem, which is doing what is necessary to counteract the efforts to break the control of the borders. Forget all the sad shots that they put out of familys with children, borders have to be respected. This is obviously too little and too late in Europe. Cheers JS As regards Captions that one that has been up now on Al Jazeera of probably a Grandfather holding his grandson in Syria with rubble in the back ground has been up now for at least two years, is about time they put a new one up, Getting too near the age of the famous penguin covered in oil. ###a mate of mine and his wife were out with us on friday night.........having a meal acouple of bottles of wine and putting bthe world to rights .....of course up comes the problem facing the country .....and in fact most countries were generations have paid taxes and tried to live by some sort of good order ......where our children and elders are looked after to a better extent......and where governments good or bad are voted for by the people..... we have built these things over generations we give generously to poorer nations ..........but now this is under a massive threat......not only from an underclass of our own who refuse to work .......and i dont mean those who look and cannot find work ......but the persistent scroungers among us .......who are now to be slowly superceded by alien in every way to our own british cultures.......we have a religion which is breeding terrorism amongst us .........yet our prime minister is being cajoled by europe for saying we will not take any of these people arriving from africa etc into italy........the only answer we came up with apart from one which would be very illegal and inhuman......was to feel really pissed of and decide to form our own group......which in common with our other national treasure under threat.........decided to call our self.......THE RED SQUIRRELLS........and protect our own nuts ........no doubt some government agency will now be in a frenzy looking for the founders of this subversive group instead of the true enemies the slims......signed ......the red squirrell.....motto ....LOOK AFTER YER OWN NUTS FIRST .....
