Sometime in the early 1960's I was in New York when I bought a full sized(Human) stuffed toy of Bugs Bunney for my then girl friend, now my wife.On arrival back to Liverpool I had to carry it on the bus from the Pierhead to Newsham General Hospital, Belmont Road. I had a heck of a job with it on the bus. The rest of the passengers were laughing their heads off. The bus conductor though offered me £10.00.00p for the toy which I refused. Cora was very pleased with my present though we had it for a number of years until we had a puppy(Real one) who ate it.

The Title of this post from Brian " I found this in my shed", if by unaminous appeal the next post might be " I found this in my Bed". Think what sort of things might turn up after 60 odd years of pulling the bed sheets, counterpane, or even an old sugar sack back might reveal. Cheers Brian, next instalment ?? John S

I have probably alluded to this before but here goes anyway.
In early 1951 on the Gothic we were anchored out in Hauraki Gulf, Auckland backed up by the all changing dock strike in NZ. The delay caused the Gothic to replace the Corinthic (I think it was) that had been chosen by the Admiralty to carry out the World Royal Tour of the King and Queen Elizabeth. Gothic was painted white with a gold band below the gun'l, up anchored and moved into a berth at Auckland. NZ Army, Navy, Air force descended on us and our some cargo was removed. We then proceeded to Wellington, New Plymouth and Lyttelton, and if I remember correctly, Port Chalmers, shedding cargo and loading freezer cargo in particular for Britain.

Everyone aboard looking for extra spondulux worked at night loading lamb and I was no exception. I'd seen enough on the Aussie coast to turn off from those commos running the show over there. The upshot was that those who were doing their bit to get Gothic back to do her duty to King and Country had a frozen lamb put aside in the galley freezer.

On arrival in London KGV the butcher sawed the lamb into four pieces and I packed it into my big canvas carry all. Off down the road to the copper; to whom I gave two half crowns, on the gate at the Silvertown exit, on to the trolley bus to Algate East, on to the District Line to Ealing Broadway. on the Greenford bus to Hanwell and knocked on the door of my Auntie. In 1951 rationing was still well in place and as I opened my bag in the kitchen most of my gear was a right mess but when I took out a whole lamb and plonked it on the kitchen sink my auntie almost collapsed whilst my Uncle Bill, a brave flight lieutenant of the Royal Flying Corps of WW1, just about cried. I loved those two (and my cousins) who were so kind to me when I went to England. That gave me one great thrill.

    Hi Richard.
Ah AH I can see why you disliked the Aussie commie wharfies, you were a capitalist, giving that copper on the gate TWO half crowns.
A smell of the lamb would have put him out long enough for you to get past him.
    Cheers Des

    It happened to me John
I went to a party in Woodstock in Cape Town, I ended up in bed with Julie, a big handsome lady, next morning I awoke with a very attractive young lady, an Air Hostess, `Hi I am Susan, Fly me`, laying by my side. I didn't know they had switched during the night. A Sailors dream, magic.

I cleared my shed out yesterday I got rid of stuff that had been there 10 years or more " one day that may come in handy" none of it had come in handy in the last 10 years and not likely to in the next 10 so it all had to go.I came across a large brass paraffin blow lamp,a three footed last which you can adjust the foot size and a small mikmaids three legged stool,I cant throw them out.I got the fright of my life I moved this bag and I heard a voice coming from it,it turned out tobe one of those birthday cards that wish you a happy birthday when you open it.

#16- I had a similar experience in Capetown although not quite Kongs 'magical dream'. Woke up in a shanty near District Six(the forbidden planet) with one female Cape Coloured and two waiters from the Capetown Castle. The expression,'didn't know which way to turn' seemed appropriate but as I always play a straight bat did not refer to me. Reminds me of a quote I posted a year or so ago- 'Last night you called me dusky princess- today you say I'm four shades darker than a tom-tom beater and what are you doing in my bed'?
