I lived there for four years and there wasn't even a road from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, one decent hotel on the side of the creek, no concrete quays in the creek, and the apartments were certainly not lush, and also put in 17 hour days. Don't think I want to go back it would spoil my memories.

It's hard for me to believe. I was there in 1977, bidding a job catering a U.S. company that had hopes of building roads. I spent a day walking around the souks trying to get a handle on the availability of food etc.. The temperature was about 120f in the shade, if you could find it. It was during Ramadan, no food or drink during the day, though I am not a mozzie, it was P.C. and smart in them days to observe local custom, when in Rome etc. Anyway, I stopped on a bridge crossing the creek that was mentioned, when a local stopped right beside me and sat up on the concrete wall where I was leaning...strained and pooped into the creek, climbed down and went on his way.

To say I was stunned is putting it mildly. While typing this a few thoughts come to mind. (a) this was the Arab version of S#%t Creek. (b) if the world needed an enema, that would where I would have gladly shoved the tube.

    Cheers, Rodney

Spent a lot of time there in the 70s
Always flew out there to join the tankers. always flew us out at least a week before joining a ship to acclimatise before joining.
It can be quite an evil place at times. Two of our Engineers wives walked down to the market by the Creek.
They were attacked by the women of Dubai, in full bin bags. The wives were wearing blouse and skirts to their knees, so that is the reason these `women` attacked them. They then flung there unconscious bodies into the Creek.
They were floating down stream and were seen by a Rig Boat Skipper and hauled out and taken to hospital where they eventually recovered. They would have died but for him.
In the Flamingo Room in our hotel a night club, lots of English Girls, on the game, were sat on Arabs knees, They fly over from Saudi in their helicopters and drink like crazy. Drinking whisky strait out of the bottle, Lighting cigars with thousand Diram notes from the candles.
I had a good thing going with Mr Ali, he had a jewellers shop, for a few years I always took him a litre of Scotch whisky, cost £4 Duty Free, and he always gave me a gold Seiko watch, cost over £100 in UK.
After we had been released from Iran after being Hostage in December 1978 after the Ayatollahs Revolution I went back to see Mr Ali, he said, " Do not come here again, things are now very bad, we are being watched, good bye my friend. " I never saw him again.
So I do not think I will ever have a holiday there.
    Cheers
    Brian.

Was in the early 1970's, prior to that I had lived in Pakistan for nearly four years, so Dubai seemed like heaven at that time, living in Karachi sure brought you down to basics, only people who would take a cheque was the electric company because they knew they had you by the b*lls. Never counted the money when it was brought in by the suitcase load, just glad to get something towards the freighting costs, start to count it, they took it away again, I mean who would want to spoil those memories!
