    Default Latest Projects

Just thought I would post my latest small projects I have been planning for Xmas
The first one is now complete (except for a wee more Paint )and is for Irene very heavy Iron Bark Wood and I have highly polished it! Sits on the Decking !

The next one is in construction Stage for my Daughter and is made of Japanese Cedar not that Heavy ,but will also be finished in High Gloss!

I still have to make a BBQ Trolly with Castors for my Son,so have to now get these finished before Xmas! Still have to go and look for More Wood for his one!
    Cheers

Possibly doesn't show up in the Pic Lads, but the First Table is Highly Polished, has three Coats of Clear Polyurethane and dries to a very hard finish almost like a plastic Coat!
Did rub back with fine Sandpaper beteewn coats as well.
Varnish is going out here and the Poly is so much easier to apply!
No streaks at all and as smooth as a Baby's Bottom!

Beautiful timber Vernon, love the Red Gum it comes up so well. To get the perfect finnish you need about 6 coats of Poly on it and yes a very light sand between coats.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Some nice looking work there Doc.
Has your chippy jumped ship though as I see the cross braces and foot rest are bolted, not mortice and tenon jointed or as a minimum pegged and doweled LOL

Vernon, the warmth of solid hardwood cannot be matched. I have often wondered what attraction was in the Scandinavian 'modern' furnishings. There is a beautiful slice of a very large log along the plate glass window in the coffee shop underneath Aldi's in Katoomba you might like to see. It came from a bloke in Lithgow who cuts these pieces.
In the 1930s, we had iron bark gum trees on our property that were true to the name. A sharp axe would almost bounce off the wood, but when it was in the grate it threw off beautiful warmth. We had one very big one about 20 feet from the house and after a few dead branches clipped the the old house my Dad decided to cut it down. It took all day (with my mother's hair standing up on end for the house) but by cutting a big wedge in the far side of the trunk the iron bark dropped away from the house. It kept us warm for many winters!
