I think Rob`s post is the nearest to what it is, a "pillow to put between the legs to keep cool in Hot weather. That is what the Steward told me on the TARKWA in 1953.
I just wondered if any members had come across them for passengers.
Maybe Vernon would know, having sailed in UCL and being from a Dutch Africaans country.
    Cheers
    Brian.

I am saying nothing about the position of Afrikan girls legs when in bed on the grounds of self incrimination

#2 Last time I was confronted with something the size of a Dutch Oven Jim,I was making my selection gazing through the Windows canal side in Amsterdam.

A Dutch oven is a slang term for lying in bed with another person and pulling the covers over the person's head while flatulating, thereby creating an unpleasant situation in an enclosed space. This is done as a prank or by accident to one's sleeping partner. Maybe best not to tell more ?

I remember on passenger ships in the 50s , before air con, I asked a steward , what are those, as I looked through a passengers window and he was making up the bed, and he said it was a Dutch Pillow, they have it between their legs when it is hot so they do not sweat.
I mentioned it to HER, SHE said rubbish on the tinternet this is what it says,...........

Was it just a round tubular pillow that I saw or as it is described as above if it was then the company was providing extra comforts for the passengers
    We never got any.

Just a maybe: (Noun) a long, body-sized pillow
Usage: I'm not sharing a bed with you unless there is a dutch widow to separate us.

Hope this helps to get to the bottom of all ?

    Dutch widow
    A prostitute.

    Dutch wife
An open frame constructed of cane, originally used in the Dutch East Indies and other hot countries to rest the limbs in bed; also a bolster used for the same purpose. Called thus because it was round, fat and just lay there.

All this time Cappy has been telling us about Mary with the wooden leg and how he got a splinter from her. It now sounds more likely he was sleeping with one of those dutch widows and got a Bamboo splinter.
Mind you there were a number of Dutch widows in CapeTown and thye could give you a lot more than a splinter.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
