Re: And so to bed
A couple of years ago as a young man sleep deprevation was quite common. Too much grog and ladies who could never be satisfied, as Vernon will testify to, kept most of us awake for days at a time.

Re: And so to bed
Not getting enough sleep? Just one week of sleeping fewer than six hours per night can lead to serious health issues, including the modification of over 700 genes
Crikey
That applies to virtually every seaman so according to the info from that website we are all brain dead, have lost all memory, obese, diabetic plus numerous other illness and ailments.
Time to go and curl up in the corner

Re: And so to bed
Good one Marian,
For teenagers it recomended 9 to 10 hours sleep a night.
I wasnt getting that in a week. I was a coal burning Fireman on one of Savages coasters. Four and a half hours on, including dumping ashes at the end of the watch and back on again after around two hours sleep , swinging a banjo feeding two furnaces, then in port like Belfast or Derry on the Guiness and back again.
No wonder I am now brain dead.
Other ships 5 hours on 5 hours off with overtime in the watch below and then the boat drills in watch below , leaping ashore chasing young ladies and supping all kinds of plonk it is no wonder I am totally knackered.
Now it is all catching up with me, up during the night, frequent visits to the Doctors, Hospital, dentist, turning obese, going deaf, eyes failing , hair falling out fast, and a low sperm count as well to put the top hat on it. and everything else it forecast,
I wonder if we could all sue the Ship owners for the Loss of Doss.
All I ever wanted was a Straight Eight.
Cheers
Brian.

#7,........... But what a life Captain, life is for living and if you don't mind me saying so it sounds to me as if you have had an absolute ball and the good news is you are still going strong
Perhaps not the purr of a V8 engine anymore, a 1600cc sounds good to me

Re: And so to bed
What a load of twaddle these researchers/experts talk, could echo Brian's experiences as could most seamen, 4 on 4 off for weeks, 5 on 5 off for longer, 6on 6 off, it goes on and your time off wasn't your own, the ship always requiring your services one way or the other, the luxury of deep sea 4 on 8 off, but the off time never really your own. Would have had to have large crews if we were supposed to get 8/9 hours sleep, don't think I've ever managed that even in these years of my dotage. Think of how much of life you would be missing, god save us from the experts.

Re: And so to bed
No matter which department onboard we all worked long days. A 15 hour day in catering for a winger was not uncommon so 'play' time was essential and we played very well ashore. In fact some of the lads were given gifts for their ability to play so well.
