Re: For ALL (Also especially for Jim)
I was going to post it Vernon, but I was waiting for the site to get back to normal.
I thought it would create an interest especially amongst the Liverpool men and also it had the docks and ships, thought maybe Kenneth may have recognised some of the Dockers.
I have not got sound on my computer, dont know why, so have not heard it.
.
Jim,
regarding Balmer, I got involved with the Cameo Murders, where two managers were shot dead in the Office of the Cinema.
He came to my house and I was beaten up by him, I was a close friend of Charles Connolly and I still keep in touch with his widow , who did 10 years in Wakefield gaol for a crime he did not commit, . Also George Kelly , an innocent man, was Hanged for it.
Another friend George Skelly, an author, wrote the book , I am in it, CAMEO CONSPYRACY,
about the murders and execution of George Kelly,
We campaigned for a long time to clear their names
Unfortunately Charles died, before we got the result but it also allowed the relatives of George Kelly to have him exhumed from under the car park of Walton Gaol so he could have a Christian burial.
George Skelly and I went to The Cathedral, the Wigwam, we cleared his name at the Criminal Court of Appeal in London, that cost a lot of time, money and hard work, when we got to the Cathedral the Security Guards on the door Refused us entry.
That was the thanks we got off the relatives of George Kelly, should have left him in the car park.
I met the killer in Melbourne , Australia.
.
Inspector Balmer was also involved in the Burns and Devlin murder case, it was almost identical to the Cameo case, where a criminal a prostitute were paid to give evidence against the accused, even tho the two lads were involved in a Warehouse burglary in Manchester at the time and were under arrest in Manchester.
They were both hanged in Walton.
Charles Connolly told me that Balmer was the only man to commit the perfect murder, he got the State to kill them.
.
Long Stories BUT very interesting
Read the books.
Cheers
Brian.

Re: For ALL (Also especially for Jim)
Brian,it is said that Kelly & Connolly did not even know each other that being the case why did Connolly turn Kings Evidence. He ended up as a bouncer or "door person" as it is called now at a cabaret club near here.Burns & Devlin was a definite stitch up.
Regards.

Re: For ALL (Also especially for Jim)
Hi Jim.
a very interesting case like no other.
A man called Johnson from Birkenhead confessed to the Murders, Rose Heilbron the first woman KC got him off in the trial and he was cleared.
Charles always swore to me that he never knew Kelly, On the night of the murder Charles said he was working a shift at Bibbys.
The trial started with the two of them in the Dock, The Jury were not convinced that they were guilty so a member of the Jury went back into court and asked the judge for define a certain point. The Judge called a halt to the Trial and dismissede the Jury, He wanted a Guilty Verdict.
Two Judges were involved in the three trials, Lord Justice Goddard and Lord Justice Casseles, both well know Hanging Judges. Indeed one was known to have an orgasm whenever he sentenced a man to death.
A new trial had to be started, Kelly first, he was found Guilty of Murder. What was not known at the time, a Jury member, had a criminal record, he was also a Cinema Manager. and so did he influence the other Jurors,? People with Criminal records are not allowed to be Jurors.
When Kelly was found guilty, Balmer went to Connolly`s cell and told him Kelly was going to hang,
He would also hang as well, if both equally as guilty. But if he signed the Paper with a confession on he would get him off with a ten year sentence.
Charlie`s Dad, who I sailed with on the GEORGIC told me, he visited Charles and he advised his son, to sign the confession, at least at the end of the day he would still be alive. So Charles signed. This automatically sealed the fate of Kelly. He lost his appeal in London, he had Rose Heilbron KC defending him but this time she failed to save him. and three weeks later he was hanged by Pierrepoint. Charles alway told me that was the worse thing he had ever done, and always had Kelly`s hanging on his concience. He didnt actually turn Kings Evidence, it is a different point of Law. but many people always said it was.
Charles did his ten years in Wakefield Prison and shared a cell with Christopher Craig who shot and killed PC Miles in London and Bentley who was under arrest at the time was executed for it.
Charles became a `Greeter` at the club where he met many celebrities and became friends with many. He knew Bruce Forsyth, Al Martino and many others.
At his funeral many Celebs came to his funeral from London, Over 400 people attended.
He served in the Royal Navy in WW2 and and also became the Royal Navy Boxing Champion. He fought and beat Randolph Turpin, who later went on to be World Champion. So he was good. As most boxers, and Royal Navy men he was well disciplined and not just another no mark.
In gaol his wife commited suicide and his daughter Tania was taken into Care down in the South of England. When he was released he got his daughter back, She bacame an Army Officer in the TA, and was a Nursing Sister at Liverpool Royal Hospital, my son was a Doctor at Liverpool Royal and worked with her. Unfortunately, She bacame an alcoholic and later committed suicide in her home in Birkenhead. I had met her a few times.
Read the book, CAMEO CONSPIRACY, there have been three editions, the last one icludes the appeal at the Criminal Court of Appeal in London where they were both cleared of the Murders.
Cheers
Brian
