How many Christians are in China?

The lack of credible statistics on how many Christians are in China today have led to estimate that vary widely.

At one end, some Bible organizations claim that there are as many as 200 million Christians in China already, not without the hope of encouraging continued flow of support for their many programs for aiding the Christians in China.

At the other end, the Chinese Communist Party most recently reported 18 million as the number of baptized Christians in China's Three Self churches in 2004.

To conservatively estimate how many Christians are in China today, let's start with the 18 million figure (the number of baptized Three Self church Christians in 2004).

2013 - 2004 = 9 years. Applying a conservative annual growth rate of 5% over the past 9 years brings the 2004 figure to 28 million baptized Christians in China's Three Self Churches as of 2013.

This 28 million figure excludes the Christian children of the baptized Three Self church Christians because the Chinese Communist Party forbids baptism until 18 years of age. Using a conservative ratio of 1 Christian child under 18 years of age for every 5 baptized adults takes the current number of Three Self Church Christians to 34 million (28 million + 20%).

Estimates on the ratio of underground house church Christians to Three Self church Christians generally range from 3 to 5. Using the in-between ratio of 4 results in a figure of 136 million (34 million x 4) house church Christians.

136 million (house church) + 34 million (Three Self church) = 170 million. But this figure double counts about a third (approximately 11 million) of the Three Self church Christians who also attend house churches during the week. Subtracting 11 million from the total brings us to approximately 159 million* Christians in China as of 2013.

This figure is corroborated by Xiaowen Ye, head of the Communist Party's State Administration of Religious Affairs, who reported at a 2006 closed door meeting at Peking University in 2006 that the Protestants in China numbered 110 million.

2013 - 2006 = 7 years. Applying the same conservative annual growth rate of 5% (110 million x 1.05) over those 7 years results in 155 million*, just shy of the 159 million figure above, as the number of Christians in China as of 2013.

155 to 159 million* is both a large and a small number. There are now more Christians in China than in the United States, but this number still represent only about 11% of China's 1.4 billion people. As large as the Lord's harvest is in China, it has only just begun.

That piece of research is astounding Rob, i was absolutely amazed that you have actually taken the trouble to find out how many People (Converted) is that the word to Christianity.
i also save ancient coins and i have chinese coins dating back to 4000 BC, i guess around that time they would have never heard of Christianity in anyway. The reason i know the dates on my coins and I have a lot of them is because its based on the Emperor of those times,
So in Modern times afterthe Great march and Ho Chi Min the churches must have got very busy with their sales people or Missionarys as they like to be called.
I suspect the Zulu,s in Africa had never heard of the (GOD) person either until David Livingstone went on his Scorched earth policy of Converting the Africans, who in turn only found out to their dismay that the White man was a very cruel species as well like Colonising and pillaging of Mineral assetts of their Countrys too.
I guess they would be very confused in what to believe in as far as people are concerned considering there were seperate buses , Ambulance , schools , and even area,s of Cities and Bars they were not permitted in, these rules were implemented by Christians, not bad eh.
I would suppose they are now awaiting on the return of JC. seeing many are now converted in a very confusing way, as starvation and poverty are still rife in many parts of the whole Continent.
The Diamond and Gold mines dont seem to have made any difference to their daily economic living conditions. Naturally they now have that extra way of seeking help by Prayer, its quite amazing that they even listen to any white person after the way they were treated by the colonists christians of course because they built the churches.
Climate change and any subject connected to it would be so far away that they would only know things were wrong by Crop Problems or changes in Growth of Foodstuffs, and also the much smaller population of animal life such as Lions Tigers Elephants and Zebra,s Rhinos are getting close to extinction even now, so there you go, in Alaska the Polar Bear will struggle with the lack of Ice, so there are very obvious Natural signs , Forrest fires in Canada in the summer.
Temperatures of 50c in California, kept very quiet too in the summer months Fire season in which we send Australian Voluntary Firefighters there too. Temperatures were getting so hot that even the modern fire fighting equipment stopped working in the intense heat. Of course many will say not so but its true . Where i live we have been warned that temps of 47c will be here this Summer well thats true too we got there last summer but this is forcasted to be more regular in terms of very hot temperatures. never before.

Hmmmmmmmmm very interesting, an agnostic? atheist? doubting Thomas? using BC (before Christ) as a datum line, why not just say 6000 years old, we would still have believed you. Glenn you are entitled to your opinions and are very verbose ( I was going to say articulate, but that's not quite correct) in expressing them. Alas you still haven't said what you expect us to do in combatting this inevitable catastrophe. Yes the world would be a different place if Christian explorers with a belief that they were being guided by a greater being to discover new lands had not ventured beyond their own shores, but alas they did, discovering new lands that gave you or your ancestors (I am assuming rightly or wrongly that you are not a native Australian, although you may well be with your comments about the 'white' man) a chance to settle down to improve, or destroy, depending upon your point of view, the land they decided to call their own. You seem to have a jaundiced view of history and mans achievements but are still willing to partake of the advantages of the systems created by people who allow you your verbosity and advantages you have in life.

I suppose we could go around in circles forever on this one, so I will call it a day and leave you to your jaundiced view of your fellow men and the world we live in. Bless you.
