British sailor missing in Pacific





Rescuers are searching for a Briton who fell overboard from a 38ft vessel nearly 2,000 miles west of Oahu
A British sailor is missing in the Pacific Ocean after falling from his vessel almost 500 miles from land.

The US Coast Guard said the 35-year-old man was conscious and wearing a life jacket when he fell overboard, but has not been found after more than 15 hours of searching.

Another man, also British and described as an inexperienced sailor, was hoisted from the ship by a rescue helicopter at 5am on Sunday.

Coast Guard spokesman Eric Chandler said that at 11.30pm on Saturday the marine rescue co-ordination centre in Falmouth informed their US counterparts in Hawaii that a man had fallen overboard from the 38-foot (12m) vessel, which was about 2,000 miles west of the Hawaiian island of Oahu and 500 miles west of the Midway Atoll.

Mr Chandler said: "It's real challenging out there. We can't get our cutters out there."

He said a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules plane from Oahu in Hawaii was searching for the missing man, and a US navy warship had been diverted to help.

Mr Chandler said that while the location of the incident was remote, it was not especially surprising.

"People sail pretty often pretty far out of reach," he said. "I don't think that it's that unusual."

The Pacific News Centre website said there were winds of 25mph and 6ft (2m) waves at the time of the incident.

There are a number of Syrian seamen missing after 2 ships collided off a Greek island, a Greek radio station said there was no one on the bridge of one vessel, and it was human error,no doubt some more info will follow.

Yes its not very pleasant to be dumped into the ocean .It reminds me of the time i had a swim in the South Atlantic Ocean.I guy said to me at a party one night and after a good few beers this guy knew i was a ex pow and said why didnt i try to escape i said well my feet could not touch the bottom and i could not swim a thousand miles ha looked at me and laughed

The ocean knows no friends I was once told. Guy trying to sail from NZ to somewhere had to give it away yesterday when his satelite radio got wet. At least he still had some sence.

the bloke who went missing of the yacht had a strobe light on his lifejacket now that would be a nice signal a flashing lite in shark infested waters at night the other person on his boat was a female now taken off now drowning is bad but them nobbys really sh.t me up cappy

A family friend is going to sail around the world next year on a yacht.
She was a BA stewardess so I guess she knows all about navigating around the world.
He works in an Office so he is definately a good navigator and ship handler.
They said it would take five years to go round.
I dont think I will see them again
