All Australian Politicians as far as I know when taking up office as a Government take an oath, I am not sure of the wording but believe they swear to look after the welfare of the people of the country. Has anyone noticed if any have their fingers crossed when taken such an oath. John Sabourn

You have either have to be a very rich man or woman to even consider running for President, if not enough millions, have someone who does, and is going to advance the huge amounts required in which case you are immediately obligated. Your right about Yanks not understanding politics , most of the elections are won by a small amount of voters who wait till the last minute and vote for the one they like the looks of best , and the amount of money spent on getting elected or not, is in the 100,s of millions. the latest govenor of florida spent 70 mill of his own money to get elected too a job that maybe pays 300 k a year . never a polititian ,a business man . and he,s running into trouble trying too run the state like a business ,and flip floping over his choices ,American politics is so crooked . and the people are so brainwashed into thinking that its sytem is the best in the world that they would not even think about applying some of other countries best qualities into thier own ' once you reach retirement age here, the suposedly medicare system takes care of your medical that you paid into all your working life and also your employer . it still costs $96 amonth and you have too pay 20% of the docs., bill unless you buy a insurance policy that can cost up to another $200 or more a month . it seems to me that everyone is after your retirement $$. before you die .so enjoy your free medical . and dont think its better over the other side of the hill . it may just turn out to be a gapeing hole .EEEK tarar lads .:cool:
My way of looking at politics and elections is watching the good old Punch and Judy show. None of us ever see who has their corporate hand manipulating the puppet. As I found out they have to conform to the aspect of allowing the lower ranks to be able to vote so to make sure they stay in control they make sure that they have control of the main actors who we vote for either way. Hence the amount of money used to discredit any other party that tries to get into power.
Sorry Neville, but medical coverage in the U.K. is not free. I think I would rather pay $96. plus your stated $200. a month than 20% v.a.t. tax vs. 5-7 % (depending on the State you live in), plus, able to be operated for a wart on your bum within 2 or 3 weeks vs. months and sharing rooms with Boltonstanis ect.. Plus you mentioned in a post that you could earn $150,000. per year in New York waiting on drunken businessmen. I cannot believe you would give all that up because you think $96 plus $200 is outrageous. And don't forget U.K. payroll taxes are 25% higher than ours. As per politicions, U.K., Oz., N.Z. or Cadn. shipmates, all say their polis. are dumb and overpaid, in addition, their percentage of participant voters are the same as ours. No disrespect ment mate, only a difference of opinion.

My wife went back to uk last year for a few weeks on family business. Whilst there she came down with a virus. Although still holders of UK passport and in receipt of Old Age Pension it still cost over 100 pounds for seeing a doctor and receiving medication. I was not amused when she told me. I pay nothing for seeing a doctor in Australia, this only however applies to Aus. citizens the way it should. Unless of course you are an uninvited guest and arrive via unlicenced passenger vessels from areas outside Australia. Cheers John Sabourn
