In the 1950's-60's, my Aunt lived in a flat by Victoria Station, waste cooling water was piped under the Thames and used to heat the flats and provide unlimited hot water.

It might not be that C.K..... It could be the future site for a " Young ****** Women's University" like what has been proposed in Nelson on the site of the old Smith & Nephew mill.

Malaysia is not too fervent ******, quite an open minded country from my many fond memories of the place.
If you wanted to go girl watching the MSC head office in Kual Lumpa was the place to be, literally hundreds of beautiful malaysian and mixed race girls in short tight shirts etc worked there.....always used to arrive early for any appointment I had there when I was working in Singapore, just so as I could sit girl watching.
So with global warming and a Malaysian outfit buying the site, watch out for a new palm oil plantation.

    Hi Keith.
You brought back old memories, when I was on the Corefleet we used to anchor off Battersea power station, as my home port was in Middlesbrough i was night watchman and had to scull the blokes ashore and back, being a deep sea man I hadn't sculled a boat since i was in the Vindi, boy judging the tide and trying not to go over the side brought some sweat out, but i managed it in the end.
    Cheers Des

    Default Corfleet...

Interesting Des. I know you know all about your old ships, but to maintain a bit of shipping interest on site I thought others might like to know about the ship.
She had a hard working life of 35 years in total(25 of those with Cory's),not bad considering she was badly damaged in a Thames collision when just a couple of years old, then survived 6 years of war.

Her immediate sisters,CORFELL and CORFIRTH,also built by S.P.Austin & Sons at Wear Dock also managed a creditable 34 years and 32 years respectively.

They certainly don't make them like that any more...

I feel that sometimes we stray too far away from shipping with some of the posts, yes I know that we discussed everything under the sun at the messroom or saloon table, but there are plenty of sites for rugby/football/cricket et al etc.

Going under the bridges to Battersea was always interesting but hard work on the steamers ("Hackney") that I was on, not only with the masts being lowered on day transits but also lowered and raised on night transits but the funnel up and down on all transits. If on aft stations you always ended up looking like refugees from the Black and White Minstrel show. (can I say that ?) If I remember rightly the funnel was cantilevered so that it was hauled down with the capstan but could be raised again by just slacking away. Always interesting passage and on some you thought whoops we are not going to clear this time, optical illusion, we always did but it was close at times. Always noticed the pedestrians were never on the centre of the bridge as we passed underneath, could have been the black smoke or also the optical illusion effect for them as well

    Default Battersea Power Station

Hi Des, if the photo of the "Corfleet" provided by Gulliver is the one you refer to, she would never have got up to Battersea power station, ships bridge is too high, mast and funnels too high and heavy construction to be lowered, as they have to be flattened. Just an observation as Kenny Everett would say "in the best possible taste" but as always I stand to be corrected

    Regards

    Ivan
