If you go by voyage numbers the shortage voyage I ever did lasted around 4 hours transhipping from a deep sea chemical tanker to the adjacent berth with a small parcel of chemical bound for a different receiver. Cheaper to put it onto us to transfer rather than shift the deep sea job. Then it was back alongside the deep sea job, a quick tank wash and pump the washings to the deep sea job and then backload three further parcels from the deep sea job for discharge at a U.K. port. Two voyage numbers in 24 hours involving around 700 metres of sailing.

I joined the MV Baknes, later to become Silverclyde, as 4/E in Antwerp '73, we loaded fertiliser in bags for Shanghai, suez was still closed so we had to go around the cape, 55 long days later we arrived at Shanghai. The ship was powered by twin medium speed B&Ws I was never involved in pulling so many units whilst at sea than on this bloody nightmare of a ship.
On a bright note however we were followed around in Shanghai, the folks had never seen a westerner! We loaded lube oil on the way back in W.Aus in 45 gall drums, the donkey man spent the 2week crossing to Capetown(beautiful city) hand pumping the oil into the tanks, we took the piss out of him saying it was arriving in Capetown in drums'- AND IT DID!!! chief took pity on him and had it pumped by the locals.
The day we took bunkers at Capetown also corresponded with semi finals of the cup, local radio had the L.pool match commentary on then went straight to the grand prix, muggins here had been running up and down taking fuel soundings trying to catch Newcastle's score the whole afternoon, thought I would be back for the final, 2week anchorage at Sceczin(spelt wrong I know) in Poland kind of scuppered that! but maybe I was the lucky one in missing it.

    How about the Shortest Leave,

I paid off the GEORGIC one morning in 1955, all hands straight into the ale house, TOM HALLS, just behind the Cunard Building in Liverpool, after several, nay, many more, ales, someone ran in and said the MEDIA wants a crowd, good job, We were carried forward in the rush, into the Cunard Building , and signed on there and then, and the following day, Christmas Eve, sailed for New York.
So paid off one ship in the morning and signed on another in the afternoon.

I never saw home or the family.

Been thinking long and hard about this one.

    Longest time between ports.
It was Christmas eve and the bottle was dropped by the barman, had to wait until Boxing day before he could get another one.
Think it was Penfolds Port at that.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

It was not a long trip, just a long drift. We were on the Fremantle to Christmas Island rock phosphate run and due to continual bad weather we drifted for 28 days and then had the dubious chance of taking 10 young scholars back to Fremantle for school. A very happy sojourn on the mv "Bermuda Trader" for just over 2 years. Got married and had first child.
