Hull scrub ?
Borrowed from elsewhere. bet that would have lead to a resignation in India Buildings. Not because of the grounding but because the mate did not get the lads over the wall for a bit of a hull scrub

Now will they get a rollicking from HO. The anchor ball is up, although the port anchor is hanging off and the starboard anchor is home and stowed, and just to let other vessels know she is flying two black balls from the triatic stay advising them that she is NUC (Not Under Command) as if other vessels wouldn't have noticed! Bet there was a change of Command. Anyway 10/10 for having the House Flag on a Striker.

Pardon my ignorance but it does appear that the hook hanging id somewhat a midships.

Agree looks like something hanging there John, but not sure its an anchor cable, as it is hanging vertical and for it to be in that position they would in all probability have had to have had a derrick topped or at least bowsing wires from aft end of foc'le, but perhaps some one has a better magnifying glass than me, and normally it would be leading aft from the hawse pipe in a bow configuration if it had been dropped to retard forward progress. Very interestin Moriarty!!

When you consider she was a Victory ship, were they built with the hope they would survive a few trips in the Atlantic convoys ? Amazing to think that some had a service life of30 years and more.
Was this design originally a British design ( Langs from Sunderland?) or am I completely wrong?
ex- Carthage Victory, 1947 purchased from US Maritime Commission, renamed Mentor, 1967 sold to Greece, renamed Visa. They must have got her off okay. Here she is in Taikoo dockyard in 1962

The 'Victory' ship was an all American design with an hull designed to accommodate a speed of 25 knots so that they could be converted to Frigates should the need arise
You are perhaps thinking of the 'Liberty' ships which were a derivative of the 'Ocean' design by J L Thompsons & Sons of Sunderland, a design started in 1936. The Libertys used the same hull as the Ocean but altered the accommodation housing into one block for ease of construction which design became known as SAM (Ships with Accomodation Midships) and had nothing to do do with 'Uncle Sam' (the President) as is commonly thought. The word SAM differentiated them from the Empire ships, again a direct derivative of the Ocean class but had split accommodation

Last time I saw a Victory ship was off Rangoon, I was on the wheel of the Wave Baron, the pilot said to the Skipper, that Yank coming up fast astern wants to beat you to the river to be first in, the skipper spoke to the Chief Engineer and we hit top speed, though she was very slowly catching up she didn't , but they were fast ships.
