I can see where Spencer was coming from, when I was away one trip my mother was given a new council house, coming home from the pub
one night I went in the wrong house and castigated them on the wallpaper, I said I told you Mum that you have to let the walls dry out, now you will have bubbles everywhere, then I looked again and two strangers were staring at me, I scampered out the door, then tried to remember our number. Great story - what was it about the Northeast coast? Spent some time on colliers so some great escapades particularly in Blyth pubs. Grimsby when the fleet was out!
It seems that these experiences mostly happened to seamen - no strings and gone tomorrow - some ports in Oz were similar, part of the life.

#14 Most families in the NE had family or knew someone in shipping of one sort or another. I had 2 uncles who were riveters in Smith’s of North Shields. My father in law was a foreman with Parsons in the Maine turbine cutting shop.going further back in history a lot were fishermen and had cobbles in Cullercoats . Did have photos of great grandmothers sitting outside of the old cottages selling the fish. The cottages and cobbles were finished years ago , and if any were left the EU soon saw they disappeared . The photos must have got lost in all our moving around. JS

Probably just as well, North Tyneside Council in their wisdom, made the sea front road from Cullercoats to W. Bay a one way system with the North bound lane only open to vehicles, the South bound lane became a cycle only lane, effectively locking in the cobles than were stored at the side of the road a couple of hundred yards from the road down to the beach. The plan created so much uproar that within a couple of weeks they had to rescind the decision. Another load of numpties jumping on the green bandwagon without thinking it through.
