When this post first came up I didn't have any idea where I had my 21st, but since then UI have found out from the RFA site that It was leaving a port in the Persian Gulf on the Wave Baron in 52

Re: Where were you on your 21st Birthday?
Full as a boot in one of the chefs cabins with a number of officers congratulating me as I looked the birthday cake.
Mashed spuds covered in mashed swedes and 21 can openers on it.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Birthday's
Well!! discharge book out calculator on hand, press button for memory recall. TANTALLON CASTLE 1966 we were on the cape run visiting the four ports including Capetown Durban Port Elizabeth East London, then as it was called Portuguese East Africa, on arrival my 21st we were anchored off Larenco Marques, we moored later in the evening, to my surprise some great shipmates took me ashore to celebrate with a dish of large Cockles plus the local Hooch. Thanks Gentlemen for the opportunity to share. Roger M.

At anchor in the Bonny River. I was on my 2nd trip as an Eng Cadet with Trident Tankers on the Busiris. Was the first and last day I ever had off with the 'blessing' of the Chief Eng whilst at sea. Nowhere to go and nothing to do!!
Made up for it a few weeks later as the Ship left there for drydock in South Shields.

If you picked up the celebrations in the Mechanics pub in S.S. You may have thought you had never left the Bonny River Chris. JS

Yes have vague recollections . However Ma Carrols used to give a sub out mid week , repayable at the weekend. I was back once in the eighties and they still had the sandbags around the front entrance to try and stop any bombs thrown through the door , would have played havoc with he sawdust on the floor . JS

Re: Where were you on your 21st Birthday?
a pub with more than you wanted.
The good old Horse and Groom In Southampton, a big stuffer bear in one corner and bars at the counter.
Bit like the ones at the old style Post Office with a small slot to pass the pint through.
You could meet any one in their what ever your choice, that was long before the LGBTIQ lot came along, think they invented it.

Re: Where were you on your 21st Birthday?
I was on the Athelstane in Salaverry Peru, the bar we were in was owned by an Egyptian chap, he said that his cousin was president Nasser of Egypt, I said yes and my Uncle is the pope ,he got a bit upset, he dashed off and returned with a photo album, he had proof that Nasser was his cousin! we all had a good laugh and he bought me a bottle of anisette for my 21st. Happy days.
