Birthdays
Hi Den.
I was in port at a refinery near Venice,a place called Mestre(think I spelt that right).
Buy this time I had drunk my fair share of booze, but on this night I had the
misfortune to light up my first fag,and Ive been coughing ever since.Really enjoyed
my years at sea,and wish I could do it all over again(without the fags?)

Took a couple of cases of beer to the mess, but most hands had turned in. Had one beer, wished myself a happy birthday, then hit the sack. Didn't know that my folks had planned a bash for me when I got back, and invited a few girls I knew. Instead of going home, went to Workington[ had met a friendly girl there homeward bound]. Then shipped out again. Do recall having trouble finding a date when I finally did get home.

I was fortunate enough to have my 21st. birthday ashore in Saigon. I can not remember too much about it except for being logged the next day, for going adrift. Christmas must have been quiet that year on the ship i was on as this is 3 days before my birthday, i have no recollections of it at all nor did I get logged. I had about another 20 birthdays at sea after that. They could not have been as good because that is the only one that comes to mind.

My 21st was on the old Franconia in New York, Pier 91, June 1956, a few bevies in the Pig till it closed at 8pm, Wrexham Lager an old 8 pennies a pint, then down the gangway through the shed and up the gangway of the old Queen Mary and a few bevies there in the Pig on B Deck square, bar closes at 10pm, and then across the road to the Market Diner and then got legless on the ale there, 10 cents a glass.
Great time.

My 21st.was spent in British North Borneo.People today tell me there is no such a place. There was when I was 21. We still had bits and pieces of Empire in that part of the World then Singapore and Hong Kong were still Crown Colonies. Not much except jungle in Borneo, made up for it a few days later in Sigapore though.
Great days never see their like again.
I'm still an unrpentant Son of the Empire.
