I grew up in the Dock area of Birkenhead, where most of the men work on the Docks including my Dad,Brother and 3 uncles. I was on the Dock in the 70s when my children started to arrive. When they where older I returned to sea. There are many nicnames on the Docks, here are a few.
Eddie Calvert----Lets have a blow./Fill the Pram---Married 10years,had 11 kids./Sell the Bed--Always on nights./The Baldy Rabbit---Lend us a few Bob,I'v lost my fare./Choco-mint---never gets to the job,'til after eight, The Lobster---Heard saying "I'v got to go home, one of my nippers is bad. One of the best I heard was, There was a guy who worked down the Southend Docks(L-Pool) His name was Bert. When anyone was talking about their wives or kids Bert would always say"I'm a single man myself" So he got called Single Bert. Bert lived near the Chinatown district of Liverpool where he met,and started courting a Chinese girl.
He got this girl pregnant whereupon He got the nickname Single Bert Humpthechink. Honestly

The funniest story I heard about dockers was when the midland bank first started giving bank loans in the 1950s they had a branch on the dock road in Liverpool the bank got invaded by a load of dockers after a loan and one of the dockers went into the bank and said to the manager can I see the loan arranger the manager replied sorry pal he is out with tonto.

My first trip to sea was in the GSNC Drake. Our run was to Tonnay Charente to load up with Hennesy cognac. The bottles were packed in wooden crates in straw. The French dockers had the knack of smashing the sling aginst the coaming as it went into the hold. Their mates in the hold would stand underneath with big tin cans catching the drips. The broken glass would be filtered by the straw and any that did get through would drop to the bottom anyway. Needless to say they were almost legless at the end of the shift, but they still managed to take some of the cargo home in odd containers.
