Did have the big soft dog but the worst day of the month occurred last week when after 14 faithful years, filled with fun and laughter, we had to take my second best friend to have him put down. He had lost the use of his back legs and could not drink or eat so it was time to say goodby to him.
Family are still in mourning and every day when I come downstairs in the morning I expect to see the softy there wagging his tail, waiting for his morning feed.

Re: Its Official!!!!
John A. In 'Liking' your post it is the feelings you have for dog. With short gaps we have had dogs since 1957 and rather than leave them when we changed countries have taken them with us. Every one that has just come to the end of their lives or because it is kinder to put them to sleep has been grieved for but it is the latter that hurts the most. Behind me on the couch is our faithful, loving companion. We've had her from a puppy and now she is ten. There are times when I think it would be nicer to stay in the warmth but she is nudging me to take her for a walk and I reckon she deserves the option.

Re: Its Official!!!!
The very best people are those who have known the love of a dog or a cat, without them live is very different. We have had cats, and I know some do not like them, for 45 years now. We brought on here to Oz and he sleeps in a pet cemetry, two others are now ashes in an urn living for over 18 years and the three we now have, mother with son and daughter, are here because the mother was an abused cat and came to our house for safety I believe. Pets give unconditional love, all they ask is food and a bed, and in return more love than you could ever imagine. John I know just how you and the family feel right now, been there and it hurts.

Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

Re: Its Official!!!!
Hi shipmates, OLD FART? not me in my mind I am still young ? the person who looks back at me in the mirror is my grand dad? hes the same person who had the heart surgery and the one who takes the tablets every day, his legs are going, and his hair is falling out , his six pack has gone , he had his O.A.P, bus pass a few years ago. But thats not me I am still young at sea going ashore in great ports and haveing a good time with great shipmates.{In my dreams} I will never be old.
