You were lucky Tony, on the ships I served you got that lovely cool "Whitfields Ointment" to rub on, it was cool until you got halfway down the deck and then its heat properties got you in the nether regions, as from recollection, you mostly got heat rash and dhobi rash in those tender parts, and once it started to work no amount of trying to wash it off stopped it burning into your skin. A lot of the lads would have qualified for the olympics 100metres or the high jump on the dash for the bathroom.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH Happy Days !!

Salt Tablets
Remember when on the 'Marylyn' of Kayes in 55 being given salt tablets after leaving Suez and heading into the Red sea and Persian Gulf. I was taken ill and couldn't stop spewing my 'ring' up. One of the 'Old 'Ands' told me to leave them alon e as 'You don't bleeding need 'em'. Funny enough he was proved right when the Israelies and Arabs had their '6 Day War' the Israelies found that some of their tank crews were being sick taking ST's. They done a survey and processed food contains enough salt to compensate for what was sweated out.
I also remnember that on the 'Marylyn' they issued lBOT lime juice after leaving Suez and seeing she was a dry ship the crew had a tot of rum once a week. Me, being a boy got a glass of squash (that the Stwd heavily watered down.
Mind you like most of you I'm getting on in years an unlike Brian(Cap Kong) my mind forgets things. Mind you Brian only remembers more 'coz 'is brain is pickled in 'Four Bells'.
Anyway to get back to ST's you can 'ave my share as when I stopped taking them I stopped being sick.

P.S. Enjoy your trip Brian and if you've room in your trunk you can take ME WIFE.

Thanks for that Michael,
They dont give out salt tablets and BOT Lime Juice to the Bloods these days. I guess there is more than enough salt in the food.
Does anyone remember if they were available to the Passengers in the 50s.
When I was on the good ship `GEORGIC` carrying two and a half thousand £10 poms to Australia in 1955, Five children died of the heat in the Red Sea. I cannot remember if they had salt tablets on board then or not.
.
Thanks Michael,.....
.

No way, I am taking the Long Haired One and her mate, a widdow woman, with me, they have started already giving me a hard time, I just want to go on my own. I want to do all the Pubs on the coast, Monties, Hero of Waterloo in Syd. and the ones in Freeo, but NO we have to go on tours of scenic country views.
AARRRGH
Cheers
Brian .

Good idea John,
The Fremantle Gaol is a good one, They have an Execution Chamber in there.
I went in there once on a tour and pulled the lever.
