My uncle had a skinning business just out side Liverpool ,I used too spend 2 weeks in the summer with my cousins . uncle Bill collect dead cats and dogs from vets around the area, and employed 5 skinners in a factory on his property , bloody awfull stench and guts allover the floor draining down too vats on the lower level where the carcasses were boiled for the fat and bones and sold too glue and fertilizer companies ,the skins were sold too leather tanners and used for hand bags and wallets and such the fine cat furs were used for ladies coats and named something else than cat fur . the uncle was in the news of the world once . but it was a legit business at the time . I dont know if it still goes on as he passed away many years ago . it was a very lucrative business as my cousins branched out into other enterprises.

hi neville. my second job after the mn was collecting fat and bones from butchers shops(very lucrative as regards fiddle) we used to load an eight wheeler with bones which i would drive to blackburn, coventry or other places, and i would also deliver the fat to various places, one of which was cleckheaton yorks. a big sign over the entrance read purveyors of edible fats to HM king george v. in the summer i reckon we lost about 5cwt in maggots as i drove up the A1. at a lot of these places i saw dead dogs, cats, and other pets and never had to buy a collar or lead. alf
