British Shell Tankers

I am chasing some info regarding the Shell Tanker HMS Nassarius (1958). My ex husband served some time on this ship and was presented with his 21st key on board. Would love to hear from anyone who has some info for me. He has departed now and my children would like to know something about the Nassarius. Would greatly appreciate this as my eldest son is getting the key preserved to give to other family members for their 21st birthdays. Much appreciated

Are you sure about the HMS prefix. Merchant ships attached to the RN usually had the prefix RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary). I imagine a shell tanker of that vintage would have been a motor ship with the prefix MV (Motor Vessel)

Pam ,if you haven't already tried, The Nassarius is listed on that Helderline site, and one of the deck apprentises who was aboard there in 58 is listed on the crew list. His E address will be there so maybe he might remember something.
I agree that you probably have it wrong with the HMS bit, but an easy mistake to make. Good Luck , Albi.

HI Pam,
Mt dad served n the Nassarius on 12th July 1945 and I'm not sure about other dates, my daughter has all of his old books but I'm going to get them and post some more messages on here. Hisd name was Robert (Bob) Pyle. He was bown in 1922 but sadly dies in 1997.
He was an able seaman and here are a few other ships he was on. I may have some old photos in the loft as I'd like to pass them on to any families that are connected to them.


Please forgive me if I've not spelled them correctly-the writing in his books has faded.

I have a sliver half pint tankerd with the shell logo on it some one told me it was used for the rum ration by a commodore, on shell ships any one know anything about rum on tankers.' I was only on B.P.and Esso so dont' know I only drank ice water !!!!

Hi

Some information about the Nassarius. I was on her (as a Deck Apprentice) in November/December 1958. At that time, the Shell shore staff in Singapore were threatening a strike, so the company was pulling Apprentices off passing ships as backup personnel to man installations, etc. The Nassarius had been laid up, and was towed (her engines were not working) down to Singapore to act as a floating bunkering station for other ships. There were 5 apprentices assigned to her. The strike never materialised, so the only work we did was to load the local bunkering barge every day. This lasted for six weeks before we were re-assigned to other ships. I do not know what happened to the Nassarius after this, but considering the physical state she was in she was probably scrapped. Hope this little bit of information helps.

Just a little bit of info about 'Nassarius'...if you click the link below you'll see she was eventually broken up in Hong Kong in '59.
