H class Shell tankers

First two ships as deck app Hadra 58/59 and Horomya 59/60. Hard working ships those H boats and went to some interesting places. These models look superb but remember the masts as being shells muddy brown colour.

Did 55 weeks on the Hinea 69 to 70 painted both masts white they had been buff the same as the funnel which I also painted red black top with fibre glass yellow shell.

Been in the loft and dug out 2 black and white post cards of the Hinea one muddy brown and one with white masts and red funnel if I can sort out the scanner I will put them on line.

I sailed on 2 H boats, 1st trip deck apprentice on Haminea 1961-62 then 1963-64 Hindsia.

The Haminea was not a happy ship under Captain Errington. The Hindsea was happy with Captain Thompson (I think) in command.
My time in her indirectly led to me meeting my wife 6 years later having kept in touch with the 2nd mate Roger Firth.

Capt Errington used to drink in the back room at the Westoe in S. Shields. Was ok with me when I sailed with him but I was engineer, he was a bit strict with the deck lads tho. He actually recognised me once over and even bought me a pint.

I can believe that. He was a plonkie when I sailed under him, a bottle a day man at sea.

His ineptitude almost killed me.
I collapsed on the monkey island with severe abdominal pains and pukiing blood going N up the Red Sea about a day short of Suez where an Egyptian doctor said I had a chill and should eat cornflakes.
The ship was going to Banias then on to Latakia in Syria. I spent most of the time until we reached Banias unconscious in my cabin and vomiting blood whenever I came round. I was finally sent ashore on a launch when we reached Banias and driven to hospital in Latakia.

When I got there I was diagnosed with an intestinal blockage and had developed peritonitis and was too ill and dehydrated to operate on immediately. After a day on a drip they operated and removed a chunk of my intestine.

After the ship arrived in Latakia, Captain Errington called in to see me, and I can still remember the look on his face when he was shown a bottle containing the piece of my guts they had removed.

The Sisters there were all Nuns with some really nice young nurses, none of whom spoke English, only Arabic and French so my schoolboy French came in handy.
When I left the nurses all came out to see me into the agent's car.

I spent over 3 weeks in hospital, mostly being fed intravenously, before being flown home from Beirut via Istanbul, Rome, Amsterdam and Heathrow.
I had gone from being a 10+ stone young man to literally a 7 stone weakling in that month.

No surprise then that I am not one of his fans.

I sailed on the Hindsia 1971/72. Typhoon damage en route to Japan from Singapore which resulted in 3 weeks dry dock in Singapore.........party time ha ha ha

i served on Hindsia as as engineer apprentice.......I think the chief was Barrington who was his wife's puppet.....she was a nightmare.......he was a little egg shaped geordie (ok on his own) she was a large lady who for some reason to a dislike to me.....happy days
