HMS vanguard
The royal navy's last battleship never saw action and only had a short life.

Only saw her once, she was at the Tale of Bank, waiting to go up to Faslane for demolition.
Superb looking shop.

Re: HMS vanguard
My brother-in-law served on the Vanguard, he said they only really cruised around, never firing a shot in anger, wouldn't like to have been on the other end if she had.

Re: HMS vanguard
Believe there was also a submarine a nuclear armed missile vessel called Vanguard built about 1993 I think , or I may be wrong. She would have been stationed in Faslane on the Clyde . In 1980 I was involved in the testing of the Stingray Torpedo, the officer in charge of this exercise was a Commander Littlejohn who was the one in charge of Britain’s latest deterrent at the time , so he may if still at that time been the Vanguards commander. If he wasn’t then he was working for the yanks in their submarine experimental school . I think Australia was quiet correct in cancelling the French submarines some idiot ordered . JS

Strange you mentioned going for demolition. I came upon this clip some years back while searching the N.A.S. When serving my apprenticeship a chap who worked in the foundry had sailed on her, his memories were when she was worked up to full speed it felt like she would shake herself apart.

Re: HMS vanguard
Does anyone remember on some ships years ago they had printed on a plaque somewhere on the bridge or if there was a rev counter similar to what they would have had in the engine room the critical revs marked in red where all the vibrations occurred , and to keep clear of these engine revolutions there could in some cases be more than one area. Never or can’t remember in later years remember seeing this on the Bridge. JS.

I remember my brother-in-law saying the same thing, he said it was enough to make your teeth chatter.

Re: HMS vanguard
I was in a Sea Scout group on TS Foudroyant in summer 1954, and we had a tour of the Vanguard. I remember being told that they didn't fire B turret big guns any more, because the shock broke the crockery in the Officers Wardroom. I hav eoften thought that it is shamefule that she was not preseved as a museum, the Belfast is good but not quite the same.
