Re: At last
Sadly it is only the winners who get to write up the history of any conflict.
It is then their choice to decide who was or was not a hero, who deserves a medal or not.
Some countries, France in particular, award them to armed forces of other nations, those who assisted the French in the conflict.
But there were some who dished medals out like pop corn at a movie, you were there so you get one even if only there for a day.

WE should strike a medal for Rugby League players out here as the commentators are forever calling them heroes.

And when not heroes they are stars or even super stars.

Hi John,
The French refused to issue any medals to us on the GEORGIC, when we spent several days under fire rescuing the French Foreign Legion off the beach in Viet Nam.
We should have got 3,000 off but lost around 500 on the beach and in the water. , so only 2,500 were returned to Algiers and Marseilles. Captain sent a letter to the French Embassy and De Gaul replied, "NONE", France is trying to make friends with Viet Nam and this would affect the outcome.
As usual De Gaul was never in a war zone

I remember reading somewhere that Eishenour had never served on the front in any war theatre, but had plenty of ribbons, naturally I stand to be corrected

Re: At last
Hi Victoria.
Considering the way he died I think a submarine would be appropriate.

Re: At last
However the age at which he died was very inapropriate.
To die so young defending his country was certainly an act of galantry well beyond the call of duty and we must be very grateful for his heroic efforts.

Sometimes we cannot remember all, though we try.

All Saints Church, Graveney, in Kent. The grave of an unknown MN sailor, a victim of the 2nd world war.
Pleased to see its being well looked after. Lest we forget.
