How Naval defence spending is having an effect on U.K./U.S. relations

This depressing article on how the reduction in spending on the U.K.'s Naval spending could have an impact on our relations with the U.S.A.'s Navy appeared in GCaptain a few days ago.
It makes very depressing reading for anyone here considering that it was not too long ago we had one of the most powerful Navy's in the world

#1... When most of us first went to sea, don't know about others but listening to older men talking was always under the impression that a naval fleet was kept up to strength by the number of merchant ships it had sailing under the national flag. This obviously went back to the birth of the RN and its original purpose to protect its shipping against piracy etc. However as some pencil brain sitting in the appropriate chair in Parliament may have saw the light and thought we have no MN ships so why do we need a navy. This would be the amount of intelligence I would imagine would be the average civil servant would have as he waited for his official gong on retirement. We will never get back to what Britain was as regards shipping. Any seaman who has sailed on different foreign flagged ships knows this and have for years, having sailed on Russian flagged ships and know that every man jack there had a naval background, with ship if under a western type crewing system would have been 9, they were 36. Chinese crews were not military trained but their merchant and warships far exceed ours. The R.N. has as the rest of the country been allowed to deteriorate beyond ever becoming the military power it ever was to be able to fight a full scale war. It has been more interested in giving away money to what they consider good causes. Its record of immigration into those green and pleasant lands is deplorable in this age of terrorism, in general the actions of some of the governments since the last war would be considered treasonable in some of those countries they give money to. I see the final ceding to the lousy decisions that some have made as being if you cant beat them join them. JWS

I did a Harbour cruise and saw the Entire British Royal Navy Fleet, Seven ships.
All laid up, not a Sailor in sight.
A Bloody Disgrace.
Argentina must be laughing at us and waiting to move into the Falklands.

John as you are good at transferring things from G Captain, I think you should transfer the Irish commentary on the boat race and lighten our day

They should maybe put 3 boats in the race Ivan especially if an Irish commentator, then he could say there are tree boats in this race and the turd boat is the winner. JWS
