Jeremy Corbyn should hang his head in shame as he has declined an invitation to attend the Battle of Jutland commemoration which takes place on Tuesday 31st May 2016. His reason for not attending being, he will be on a short domestic holiday.
The British lost fourteen ships and 6,784 men and the Germans lost eleven ships and 3,058 men in this battle which can only be descibed as "slaughter at sea".
May all these brave men R.I.P.

#1, What an odious twerp, does he have any redeemable facets? The Battle of Jutland commemoration is to honour those who died defending our country, this snivelling wimp rather than state his true pacifist opinion offers instead a 'short holiday' excuse........ Well make it shorter then. The Labour Party are in an extraordinary position of having a leader with among the most extensive links in Parliament to terrorists. This conscientious objector though, doesn't mind lowering his pacifist stance by inviting Gerry Adams and members of Sinn Féin [to name a few] to the Palace of Westminster in 1984, weeks after the Brighton hotel bombing by the PIRA, which killed five people. His solidarity views did not go unnoticed with Jawad Botmeh and Samar Alami for the 1994 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in London. Botmeh and Alami had admitted possessing explosives and guns but denied they were for use in Britain, so that's alright then, he assumes we the general public are as thick mince.

On second thoughts I'm glad he's not attending. The Rt Hon Jeremy Corbyn, don't make me laugh, he is a sorry excuse of a man in my view.

Hi Marian.
I don't believe in war; it never solved anything, but if someone attacks your country you fight; as those young blokes did at Jutland and they deserve to be remembered, as do the men who fought in the second world war. May be Corbyn would have liked to have lived under the Nazis.

It wont be long before the war never happened, this will be by decree of Brussels. People like Hitler who led the whole of Germany apart from those who deny they were Nazi followers. This was done through mass hysteria and alarm exactly with the same results as Europe is hoping to achieve through the EU referendum. Once they have total control the blinds will go up and people will see when it is too late what their own stupidity has lead them into. The present law of Political Correctness will be further advanced and any disclaims or bad publicity against the state will be punishable. Power brings corruption as all can see with some of the dictatorships in South America. They will have nothing on a so called united Europe. Already the lot of them are corrupt, and with full power watch the sparks fly and will have no means of control. Bits of signed paper did not stop Hitler and it wont stop this lot. JWS

The memorial service, which Corbyn refused to attend is on BBC 1 tomorrow morning, starting at 10.45. The service is live from Orkney.

Just can't throw this thread into the long grass yet, can we?.
King George VI (then Prince Albert) served aboard HMS Collingwood at the Battle of Jutland. On the eve of the battle he was in the sick bay aboard the Collingwood suffering from a stomach ailment. Despite this, he manned a gun turret and fought throughout the engagement, the last British monarch to see action in war. He was commended in the London Gazette for his part in the battle.
Something to remember:
This nation still looks to the men and women of the Royal Navy to protect its interests at home and around the world. And although the world has moved on, the values of duty, courage and selflessness shown by those who died at Jutland, our naval values do not change from one generation to the next.

Good examination into the causes of British losses which were so much higher than the German losses though as a result of the Battle the German High fleet never sailed again and the blockade of Germany was able to continue with the resulting starvation of the Germans in terms of war material and food.
Cock-ups by the British,
Beattie using flag signals to order a course change towards the German fleet and ending up with his battle cruisers being miles astern after failing to be able to even see the flag signals let alone read them. No reason given for not using morse (which was available) or signal lamps. Weather at the time along with all the smoke from the funnels went visibility was only around 5 miles.

In order to gain a rapid rate of fire of the 15 inch guns, cordite (the propellent used to propel those huge shells) was stowed in the gun turrets and the shaft down to the magazines below the water line was left open with the fire doors open in order to get the cordite stowed there up to the guns more quickly.
A direct hit on a gun turret caused an explosion of cordite within the turret and a flash fire travelled down the shaft causing a massive explosion within the magazine which, due to the massive hull armour around the ship contained that explosion in a confined area thus increasing the power of it. So a disregarding of basic safety precautions over the demand for a more rapid fire rate led to the loss of those dreadnoughts and huge loss of life.
The pride of the British fleet, Queen Mary, took 7 hits and exploded in a massive fireball disappearing in minutes, one German ship took 27 hits yet still managed to limp back into port.
Both British and German ships had the same number of watertight divisions and the same thickness of armour plating, it was the British lack of use of modern signalling methods coupled with there wish to have a greater fire rate rate by leaving magazine fire doors open, that led to the British loosing more capital ships, so although on paper it was a British battle loss it was a triumph in that the German fleet never again took to the high seas so the British were still able to cut off the German supply route and starve them of the much needed war supplies.
