I think that the term boats amongst merchant seamen is more a term of endearment realy Ivan a bit like saying I was on a couple of Star boats or Port boats it just runs off the tongue easy, how many times have we heard the saying Baron boat , as far as soggy bread goes we had our fair share of that aboard the old Pilcomayo regards Dave .

Yes Dave, I should kick myself up my backside, as I've used it, but I'm so used to correcting visitors who see a 40-60,000 tonne ship and say have you seen the boat as if it were something on a boating lake.

So you have my permission to kick me up the rear in case I miss

    Regards

Bettween ourselves Ivan we are allowed to use the wrong termanology but we aint letting those who know nothing about the real ships that we sailed in speak about them as if they where as you say something on a boating lake, just an after thought it must have been a tough time resisting all that temptation of the west coast of South America as a young cadet I only did the run once and that was in the Royal Mail ship Eden we where on a p.s.n.c . charter for some reason, great trip though and oh to have had just one more trip to Valparaiso well perhaps more than one but in those days as an a.b. I as we all where was spoilt for choice of great runs although I doubt it has been that way for many years now best regards Dave .

Who resisted, it was surprising what you could get for a couple of bars of "Yardleys" soap especially when you were sixteen and looked about twelve. Never thought I'd go back to breast feeding!!!!!!!!

Yardleys...a favourite product for the contrabandistas or so I was told together with dire warnings not to go aft for an hour or two after leaving Rio as they would be dumping bags over the rail to be picked up by others following. I never did go to take a look but apparently the little passenger shop always was out of stock by the time we got to Santos.

    Default Callao jail

Great memories. Pity we didn't appreciate what we had at the time.
Just for the record Dave it's Cartagena and Callao.
I was 3rd Mate of the Albany and one morning in Callao the Mate told me to go with the agent to get a couple of the deck crowd out of jail. Went into town, did the paperwork and the agent paid the money (bail or bribes, who knows?) but the local Marineros wanted more. The agent said no so they turned on me. I told them to F off, I was a rough tough third Mate after all and finished up spending a couple of hours behind bars with the boys.
Got back to the ship in time for a beer at Noon and had to explain it all to Captain Chatterley.
Anyone on here on the Albany then? According to my Discharge book that would have been sometime in 1964 or 65.
