TO BE HONEST I DO NOT KNOW HOW THEY KEPT GOING, THE BEST THEY COULD HOPE FOR IF SHOT DOWN WAS TO BE A POW, OUT GUNNED, NO LONG RANGE ESCORTS UNTILL LATE IN THE WAR, ALMOST SUICIDE MISSIONS, HAVE MY DEEPEST ADMIRATION.

While I agree whole heartedly with these sentiments,if it hadn't been for Merchant Seamen in tankers,those planes could not have got off the ground. In those days this Country had no oil of it's own.It had to all be imported.
