I think he got the job by Hanging around the Employment Office, He would have been absolutely ropeable when he found out what the job actually entailed.
He would have hanged some realy horrible people, i wonder if he actually slipped the black hood over their heads before he pulled the lever on the trap door.

K @T just remembered, my ex boss, because I am retired, told me that his father was picked as a spitfire pilot because he was a small man . A good Kiwi bloke who did what he had to do at the time.

In the news toady, an agreement has been reached and the remaining Spitfires will be returned to UK. All said to be in good condition, did someoen say the UK gov has cut funding for armed services?

Gulliver belated thanks for post on William Joyces brother. pleased it was untrue. However do know it was true that the official hangman at the time was Pierrepoint chistian name either Henry or William. Think he owned a pub somewhere. Cheers John Sabourn

I actually saw Pierrepoint on several occasions.[No john I was not standing on the trap door]
My best pals dad ran the Garden House pub in Durham City.
He used to stop in there for a pint after a hanging in Durham prison.
As kids we used to peep into the bar to have a look at him.
Ah the good old days when they topped the villains!
We could sure find work for him these days.

It would appear that the spitfires are being well protected.Guards shot dead a looter and fired at other raiders at the two sites where there are 54 planes worth £100 million.David Cundall,62, found the planes and wants to return them to Britain.He said: "Looters have tried to get them,but we're happy with the guards.

Tony,I heard David Cundall last night on radio 5Live he said due to the monsoon season the water table is quite high so this has delayed the dig,He hopes to start the dig first week in January and have the first plane up middle of January.It is strange I've noticed in the paper and on TV they refer to the place as Burma.
