My grandfather Hector Torrie (from Islay), Boatswain, Merchant Navy
Hello everyone
Please could you help with any information on my grandfather Hector Torrie (born Islay, Argyll, Scotland 05.12.1905 -died 28 August 1980). His discharge number was R.176917.
He was a Boatswain in the Merchant Navy and he received a Mention in Despatches for distinguished service in the London Gazette on 11 July 1944 which states “For great courage and organising ability in limiting the damage when the R.F.A. Derwentdale was bombed during operations at Salerno.”
How can I find out further information on his service history in the Merchant Navy and Arctic Convoys, what happened exactly on the RFA Derwentdale and would he be entitled for an Arctic Star medal?
Kind regards
Mhairi
(Granddaughter of Hector Torrie)
